COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY SOU heads north for CCC Preview Hixon coming off third-place showing at Humboldt Invite By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 11:17 am By SOU Sports Information Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 11:17 am » Social News The Cascade Conference Championships are still 50 days away, but Southern Oregon University's cross country teams will have a better idea of where they stand today at the conclusion of the CCC Preview Meet. Every team in the conference but College of Idaho is expected to converge in Portland for the 5 p.m. men's race and the 6 p.m. women's race. The course is set in Fernhill Park, running 8,000 meters for the men and 5K for the women. In their first races of the season last Saturday, the Raider men beat out three teams to win and the women were second of six at the Humboldt Invite. Consequently, the men stayed put at No. 2 in this week's NAIA Top 25 and the women dipped slightly to 15th. Raider coach Grier Gatlin would like to see both teams be more assertive early on in their second tries. Jared Hixon, SOU's top men's finisher, had to make up over 20 seconds after the first two miles to place third in 25:54.89. Half of the top-18 placers were Raiders, including sixth-place Max Runia and 12th-place Ray Schireman, who were both making their SOU debuts. Jessa Perkinson and Karen Silvas made strong first impressions on the women's side in seventh and 11th. Summer Cano and Rebecca Lupescu, SOU's top returners, were steady in fourth (23:50.58) and sixth (23:25.58). Sixth-ranked NCU is the team to beat on the women's side. The Beacons already have two team wins — most recently the Ash Creek Invitational, where sophomore Sierra Brown paced them on a 4,200-meter course with a runner-up time of 14:29.9. Minus 2013 NAIA champ Hillary Holt, College of Idaho remains a contender and moved up seven spots to No. 16 in this week's Top 25 after Lila Klopfenstein led them to a team title at Northwest Nazarene's Roger Curran Invitational. Concordia, at No. 24, is the CCC's fourth ranked team. Concordia was expected to be SOU's top competition among the men's teams, but the Cavaliers went from No. 8 in the NAIA to out of the rankings altogether following their performance at Ash Creek. Three of their runners took did-not-finishes, taking away their ability to score as a team, and Roman Kirkov was the top finisher in 23rd. Lucas Updike paces 12th-ranked Eastern Oregon, and Max Hampton does the same for No. 18 College of Idaho. Northwest Christian, which was initially unranked, went to No. 16 courtesy of a second-place team standing at Ash Creek, which was led by Alek Angeli.
