Kerry is on our side on these issues and also champions legislation supporting the Endangered Species Act and Public Lands Protection. He supports the Superfund Act's "Polluter Pays" trust funds to clean up hazardous waste sites. He has favored reduction in our dependence on oil and supports measures to increase clean renewable energy. Kerry has opposed the Bush administration's attempts to weaken the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Kerry would work to reestablish the U.S. as a world leader on environmental policy. Please vote for John Kerry. Myra Erwin Ashland Criminal justice system is a mess The criminal justice system in Jackson County is barbaric and not fit for a civilized community. Police harassment is rampant on the streets. You see so many police cars in Ashland proper you feel like we're under martial law. More importantly, the essential civil rights of defendants are being trampled on. The accused now only gets a trial within two months if they're actually being held in jail. Prisoners are charged for being imprisoned before any charges have even been filed against them. The most striking symbol of this corruption, yes corruption, is how much bigger the D.A.'s office is than that of the public defender. Sean L Nelson Ashland Thanks for filling the boot On behalf of Ashland's Firefighters (IAFF Local 1269), many thanks to Ashland's citizens and visitors for their generosity with this year's "Fill the Boot" campaign. With your help, we were able to raise more than $2,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (www.mdausa.org) in our donation drive at the East Main/ Pioneer Street intersection. Nationwide, the International Association of Firefighters raises approximately $15 million a year for the MDA. Local families afflicted by various neuromuscular diseases receive support from the MDA in the form of medications, wheelchairs, medical equipment, and necessary treatments and procedures. One local child has even had the opportunity to attend a special MDA summer camp for the last three years. Thanks again for giving so much to those who truly need it.
