EDUCATION Former Ashland student joins Teach for America Comment By John Darling For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By John Darling For the Tidings Posted Sep. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM By John Darling For the Tidings Posted Sep. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Kylie Petermann went through Ashland schools, got a degree in English in 2014 from Hawaii Pacific University, then, after a stringent training at Rice University this summer, landed her first teaching job in August, teaching English to seventh graders as a corpsman with Teach For America in Houston. “I really love my job here and the kids make it worth it all,” says Petermann, who left Ashland during her senior year of high school to finish up in California, but is on record as a 2010 ASH graduate. She plans to stay to stay the minimum two full years required by Teach America, she said. She is teaching at YES Prep, in the East End neighborhood of Houston, Texas. “Getting the teaching job is a very long and rigorous process,” she notes. “You do tons of professional development, teaching summer school at the Houston district. It was hard and I have lots of new respect for my old teachers.” Petermann said she especially would to give a shoutout to Caroline Spear, her Ashland High School English teacher as a major influence. The nonprofit Teach America Program (TFA), she notes, searches out top baccalaureate program graduates and trains them for low income areas of big cities, where there is lots of income disparity. The teachers are full-fledged faculty members. The TFA nonprofit group works to expand educational opportunities for students in low-income communities, were only 6 percent of students graduate from college by the time they're 25. The TFA program was founded in 1990 by Princeton graduate Wendy Kopp, author of “One Day, All Children: The Unlikely Triumph of Teach for America and What I Learned Along the Way,” in 2011. During the past school year, TFA had more than 50,000 corpsmen and alumni working in the teaching field across the country, accoding to a statement from TFA. It is part of AmeriCorps, which in turn is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency. In its first year, Teach For America placed 500 teachers, according to its website. The organization received more than 48,000 applications for its 2012 corps, resulting in 5,800 new corps members.
