Letters to the Editor, Oct. 15 Saturday Oct 15, 2016 at 12:01 AM Vote yes for history Last weekend I helped with the Scarecrow Festival at the Historic Hanley Farm. What a pleasure to watch parents and young children stuffing scarecrows with straw and engaging in other traditional activities reminiscent of our rural past. If you live in Jackson County, you are heir to a rich and fascinating local history. On Nov. 8, each of us has a special opportunity to support our local heritage by voting yes on a measure that will provide stable funding for 15 historical and genealogical societies throughout the county. This support will assure that our community’s history is preserved through the collection and proper storage of irreplaceable artifact, documents, and oral histories and allow these organizations to share this history through exhibits, children’s educational activities, living history presentations, and other public programs and events. Please vote yes on Measure 15-164 so that activities at Hanley Farm and elsewhere can continue. Dawna Curler Medford Vote your conscience The latest “debate” between the major party candidates prompts me to write this letter. It is discouraging to witness the vacuous character assassination exchanges between these two, when important issues are ignored. The Republican nominee is divisive and the Democrat is supported by Wall Street and believes that Wall Street should regulate itself. Both candidates are proud members of the 1 percent status. I was a Bernie supporter. I am supporting Jill Stein of the Green Party (Jill2016.com). She is committed to climate change solutions, Wall Street regulation, ending our military involvements, and canceling student debt. She takes no political contributions from corporations. The only wasted vote is the vote that you cast against your conscience. I am supporting an ethical and serious candidate. I would urge everyone to consider the alternative to the carnival candidates that the Republicans and Democrats have chosen. Marguerite Schellentrager Talent A source of pride October 16-22 is the 11th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week, making it a good time to publicly thank the Friends of the Ashland Public Library who contribute so much of their time and expertise to significantly enhance our services. Our Friends group was founded in 1983 and, over the course of the past 33 years, they have donated to and supported children’s, teen and adult programming, special collections, furniture, landscaping, equipment and more. They make toddlerobics possible! They were instrumental in getting the new Ashland library built, which was listed this past month as the best library in Oregon for architectural design: http://bit.ly/2dvAO1L I know that the Ashland Branch Library is a source of pride for our community. Our Friends group is a source of pride as well. I hope this week everyone will call or visit the library to find out how they can join and support this outstanding group. Amy Blossom, library manager Ashland Vote for Moro There is no question in my mind that the Senate seat once held by Dr. Alan Bates must remain Democrat. There is only one Democrat running and that is Tonia Moro. Alan DeBoer stated in the Mail Tribune that “Democrats would be better off to have me as a Republican.” I will reject the Trojan horse strategy of this good man, who is most definitely a Republican representing the Republican agenda, and instead I will vote for the only Democrat for Senate District 3, Tonia Moro. The only candidate who will express progressive values, representing working class families, who will truly carry on with Senator Bates’ long body of work in Salem, is Tonia Moro.
