Ashland is calling for female shredders to get out there this Sunday for the first ever “Get the Girls Out at Mt. Ashland” event. Women snowboarders and skiers of all ages are invited to participate in a full day of activities that include free demos, clinics, yoga, acupuncture and warm tea.  The event was originally scheduled for early February, but was postponed due to the snow deficiency on the mountain. After much anticipation, Mother Nature is expected to bless the slopes this weekend. “With up to a foot of new snow forecasted through Saturday and sunny skies expected for Sunday, the ‘Get the Girls Out’ event is shaping up to be some of the best conditions of the season,” said Mt. Ashland spokesperson, Jamie Schectman.  “It’s really important to come support Mt. Ashland and skiing in the Rogue Valley this season,” enthused Kimberly Ross, one of 10 volunteers planning and organizing the event.  Ross, a year-round skier going on her 15th year of a 184-month skiing streak, is an ambassador for SheJumps, the nonprofit organization hosting the event. SheJumps is a national campaign that aims to increase women’s participation in outdoor sports by uniting, challenging and mentoring communities of outdoor enthusiasts. A major goal of the event is community building. “‘Get the Girls Out’ is an event for women to have fun and connect with friends, new and old. It’s also an opportunity for women to share and inspire other women. Maybe at our event you’d ski a new part of the mountain, meet more ladies who love to ski, hone some snow skills and make plans to ski again!” said Ross. Ross attended her first “Get the Girls Out” event at Utah Olympic Park in 2007. “Freestyle ski aerialists practiced jumps off huge ramps and landed in the park's 750,000-gallon training pool, and we were taught to ski down the ramps and jump into the water too! Some of us even tried front flips, back flips, and 360s. We met so many awesome ladies from all over the country — and we all had a blast together!” said Ross, remembering the scene that inspired her to help plan similar events. Back flipping is not for everyone, Ross acknowledges. At the Mt. Ashland event, participants of all skill levels will have the opportunity to learn and refine their skiing and boarding skills at mini-clinics for steep skiing, the terrain park, avalanche beacon drills and, weather permitting, a powder-skiing clinic.  The event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mt. Ashland Sunday, March 1, and is free with a lift ticket. Mt. Ashland will be offer specially discounted lift tickets for $35.
