--> --> July 12: Local sports in brief The Southern Oregon Tennis Club in joining up with other tennis clubs in Oregon to give the future tennis stars a playday Saturday at the Southern Oregon University tennis courts. The playday is open to novice players from age 9 to 17, and the focus of the playday is to get players into competing in matches and team skills. "This should be a good thing to promote tennis," said SOTC's Gail Patton. "We are focusing on getting the kids out in team competition and having fun. Winning is not the big push - just for the kids to have some fun." Patton said the SOTC is doing the playday as grass-roots campaign to boost tennis play in younger kids. "The kids will be fairly novice, not really skilled yet," she said. "But we will get them on the court and let them have a lot of fun." The serve and volleys are scheduled to get underway at either 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. depending on a team from Coos Bay, according to Patton. The cost of the playday is $10 per player. Interested players can contact Patton at 482-2576, or Valerie Wright at 773-6161. The Southern Oregon University women's tennis camp will be held Aug. 5-8 at the SOU tennis courts off Webster Street.
