The rustic restaurant and resort sports something new — five more cabins — and something old: bragging rights as one of the longest-running restaurants in the Rogue Valley, says owner Diarmuid McGuire, plus it continues to serve as the community nerve center for the Green Springs region. The benefit concert, called “NitaPalooza: Bands ‘n' Bras,” starts at 2 p.m. Sunday and on the Inn's deck and adjacent lawn, featuring Lovely, Teri Cote & Rob Tyre, Jeff Stanley and Rainy & the Rattlesnakes — the latter being “future superstars,” now in their early teens, says McGuire. The area seats 150. A $10 donation is asked for Day, who is undergoing alternative medical treatment not covered by insurance, he says. The “bra” sale, a long-running joke in the Green Springs, comes from the fact that a friend of Terry Cote quit an internet underwear venture and gave her the inventory — high quality bras — which she hopes the event will finally get rid of. McGuire and his wife, Ashland city councilwoman Pam Marsh , and their son, Padraic McGuire, all partners in the resort, report that, mainly because of the new cabins and good ratings on the internet, the place is thriving, with each year better than the last. Padraic, a graduate of construction engineering at University of Montana, designed and built the nine cabins, cutting dead-dying timber on their land and milling it on-site for the units. They built five in 2008 and another four this year. An eight-room lodge still functions , built by the original owners in 1981. A new amphitheater features many acts and a blues festival in summers. Cuisine, he notes, tries to be “elegant in a simple environment.” McGuire and Marsh were active — he in marketing for hospitals and she as a Palo Alto planning commissioner, but then the health care initiative of the Clinton administration collapsed and they wanted a simpler life in the Oregon mountains, to raise children, he notes. McGuire says the Inn never could have survived in the old, expensive advertising media, but it was “the good fortune of the internet” that made it all possible, with guests from the Bay Area, Seattle, Germany and Japan finding them on TripAdvisor . “I’d never heard of Trip Advisor, but they were reading consumer-generated reviews and were calling us from I-5, saying we were rated the best hotel in Ashland and saying they would be here shortly,” says McGuire. “The internet educated me. We’re so lucky to have this medium come into existence when it did.” The Green Springs is a winding, half-hour drive from Ashland but seems a world away — and visitors, he notes, “get a sample of life that’s so rare today, a close-knit community where people are involved in the fire department and schools and all know and help each other, like we’re doing for Nita this Sunday.” John Darling is a freelance writer living in Ashland.
