These are supposed to be the best TV commercial spots of the whole year. The half-time festivities are usually world class, such as the Rolling Stones or Janet Jackson who, in 2004, infamously had a wardrobe malfunction in front of millions. So, get out the chips and greasy, fried snack dishes, whip together some primo guacamole and drag in thoses cases of suds! However, the flip side of the day are those hordes of family members who don’t care for football and can be seen in the kitchen playing Scrabble, sipping the vino (wine and football? They just don’t seem to go together) and chatting, as if life were going on as normal. We asked Ashlanders, many filing in a local market to stock up on snacks and suds, “What are you doing on Super Bowl Sunday? Who are you rooting for? Are you planning an Ashlandish alternative celebration? Or what? Joe Schaffer — I’ll probably watch it at my house, with my roommate. Me, I couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl. I hate both teams — well, it’s not hate, sort of indifference. I have no favorite teams. And the fans, god, they are stupid.  Mike Sanson —I’m going to leave the country and, like my friends, go to Cabo San Lucas. I’m so not into the Super Bowl. There’s so much glitz and hype. I don’t get it. I don’t follow the sport, except I root for my UCLA once in a while. My wife and I are into the outdoors. We’ll watch the World Cup. Now that’s real football, a lot of effort for few scores. We’ll work on our daughter’s wedding, coming up this summer. Rudy Miner — I’m really not interested in pro football. We’ll do what we always do on Sunday, wash and iron. I don’t really think about the Super Bowl much.  Michelle Arellano — I’m going to go hiking. I’m not interested in it, except for the commercials. It’s so fun to see what they do every year. They always push the bar. I do like the Seahawks. Also the Ducks, once in a while. The sport is a little violent. I’m challenged with how obsessed people are about football and how much they get paid, when there are so many people doing good in the world and not getting much for it. It’s overglamorized. I work in a nonprofit and I know what it feels like. My son is 25 and he might watch it. I like how the Seahawks coach practices meditation and mindfulness and has a strong spiritual practice.  Jeremy Bakke — Yes, I’ll be watching it, hanging with family and friends. I don’t care about football, but I’ll be for Seattle, because everyone is here. I’m really for the Packers. The beer, fried foods, nachos will be great, and hanging with my brother and friends, both boys and girls. This thing is huge now.
