But to Ashland High head coach Charlie Hall, it’s mostly just another nonconference game, and thus another opportunity for the Grizzlies to define themselves. “We haven’t done anything this year to say that we’ve established ourselves as a top five team,” he said. “I think we’re there because there’s no Sherwood or West Albany. We have that potential to be good, but I still think we’re going to need to earn that right.” The No. 2-ranked Grizzlies (2-0) can do a little earning tonight when they pull into Bend for a game against 10th-ranked Summit (2-0), a team with some star power on its sidelines and two impressive wins under its belt. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Summit High School. Grizzly fans who can’t make the trip can watch it via live streaming – a link is available at ashlandfootballclub.com. The Grizzlies are coming off a 40-19 trouncing of Dallas that included a 34-point second quarter for Ashland. Summit was even more dominant last week in a 52-6 win over Franklin. The Storm of the Intermountain Conference is led by 6-foot-2 sophomore quarterback John Bledsoe, the son of former NFL and Washington State quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The younger Bledsoe is off to a spectacular start in his first season on varsity. He’s completed 32 of 43 passes for 496 yards and six touchdowns under the tutelage of his father, who is Summit’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Summit also employs former NFL tight end Kevin Boss, who won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants and is the Storm’s tight ends coach. The Storm has a local connection as well — head coach Joe Padilla played for Southern Oregon University before graduating in 1998 and moving on to coaching stints at La Salle, Clackamas, Rex Putnam, Mountain View and finally Summit, originally as an assistant, in 2007. Hall, who coached Padilla at SOU, says Summit’s third-year head coach has the Storm headed in the right direction. “I think they’re really coming into their own as a program,” Hall said of the Storm, which advanced to the 5A state playoffs last season, three years after suffering through its second straight winless campaign. “The thing that certainly helps is that they have some legit NFL guys that are coaching with (Padilla). That just brings credibility. And they’re playing with confidence.” Summit has a right to be confident after last week’s performance, which included 497 yards of total offense for the Storm. Bledsoe, who has been praised for his ability to read opposing defenses, has plenty of targets to choose from. Against Franklin, junior tight end Cameron McCormick (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) had five catches for 180 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown reception 23 seconds into the game, sophomore receiver Kyle Cornett (6-1) had six catches for 110 yards and junior receiver Sean Kent (5-6) had a 45-yard touchdown reception. The Storm also rushed for 128 yards, and Bledsoe completed 21 of 29 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. “They’re progressive when it comes to high school football,” Hall said of Summit. “Offensively, they kind of look like the New England Patriots, with two and three tight ends, which helps you in the run game. They bunch them up. And they have good speed, good size and they’re athletic. It reminds me of a really good basketball team that plays football.” Hall said McCormick is as explosive as Ashland wide receiver Shashi Penn, a junior, who had five catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns in his season debut against Dallas. Penn could have another monster day against Summit’s high risk, high reward defense, which employs an aggressive, man-on-man style. That defense smothered Franklin last week, but surrendered 19 points in Summit’s 41-19 season-opening win over Pendleton. Hall said if Ashland’s offensive line can protect junior quarterback Kyle Weinberg, the Grizzlies could spring some big plays. “They are a blitz-happy team that plays really tight man coverage,” Hall said. “That puts pressure on (Weinberg), but if we can get Shashi free and other receivers to create separation that can make for a long day for them. But their (defensive backs) are pretty good. That’s how they make their living. They’re going to play man coverage.” Attempting to relieve some of that pressure will be Ashland’s rushing attack and screen game, which looked in midseason form against the overmatched Dragons last week. Weinberg and Robitz combined for 148 rushing yards, and Weinberg completed 12 of 16 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Another first-half explosion would be nice tonight, but Hall says that’s a long shot. “It’s going to be a really good challenge,” he said. “It’s a really good test, and the fact that it’s on the road is going to give our kids a little out-of-their-comfort-zone kind of challenge.
