The result: one hour of focused effort that could generate more than 6,000 pounds of food over the next year! Lots of numbers here. What they add up to is a fabulous contribution to Ashland Emergency Food Bank. On Saturday, Ashland Food Project organized a donor recruitment drive that was a model of efficiency and accomplishment. It was a highly orchestrated strike, in and out of the neighborhoods in 60 minutes. The takeaway — recruitment of 102 green bag donors — will produce a long-term payoff to Food Bank resources and narrow the gap between demand and donations. We are extraordinarily grateful to AFP. Green bag donors fill our shelves and feed our customers. To know that we now have upwards of 2,500 AFP'ers is to understand the immense compassion and generosity of this community. Pam Marsh, manager, Ashland Emergency Food Bank Mandatory vaccinations Mandatory vaccinations for attendance in public schools are to protect all of the students, not just the child vaccinated. The alternative to vaccinating is home school. Reasons for vaccinations in general are to prevent or mitigate serious diseases. Measles can result in pneumonia (fatal in 1 out of 1,000 children) and brain infections, possibly resulting in chronic debility and death. Mumps after puberty might cause sterility. Hepatitis B can cause cirrhosis and cancer. Bacterial meningitis causes death in hours. HPV could be the sole cause of cervical cancer and is the leading cause of throat cancer. Diphtheria has a 20 percent to 40 percent death rate. Whooping cough persists for months. Tetanus is usually fatal. Polio and smallpox have been nearly eliminated worldwide. All are preventable with vaccinations. The complication rate from vaccinations is extremely low. Being unaware of information is ignorance, for which there is a cure. Disbelieving scientific evidence with no information to the contrary is stupidity, for which, sadly, there is no antidote. Making decisions as an adult to reject treatments for any illness is one’s legal right. Rejecting treatment for a child based on stupidity, in my opinion, should be considered child abuse. Dr. James Hoftiezer, FACP, Medford See Plaza documentary The Plaza documentary "Where Have All The Colors Gone" has received many inquiries about when it will debut. Our two previous films, “Two in a Million” (Dave Marston and Robin Lawson) and “Bowmer in the Park” were accepted by Ashland Independent Film Festival, as well as other festivals. However, this film will premiere at Ashland’s Havurah Shir Hadash on Wednesday, April 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A $5 donation is requested, refreshments will be served, and live music by Bryan Holley will precede the screening. Based on two years of fact-gathering, interviews and analysis of public records accessed by invoking the Freedom of Information Act, “Where Have All The Colors Gone” uses film to hold up a mirror that reflects how unprepared Ashland’s City Hall was to undertake renovating the downtown Plaza. We hope that this film will inspire citizens to open their hearts and minds and help create "positive action" to restore our historic Plaza. Join us at the Ashland Havurah 185 N.
