She came to AIFF with a degree in Cinema Studies and Film Production from New York University and 15 years experience in producing and editing film in New York and San Francisco. This is the second of a two-part interview. The first was published on April 30. EH: What is a day in the life of a film programmer? JF: It’s reading all the blogs, newsletters, and all the emails, every day, to know what happening in the industry and tracking films. I go to conferences and see new work, and meet with filmmakers, and travel to other festivals and see films. And then it’s tracking all of those works in progress and films that are on the circuit. Then in September we open our call for entries, and that’s when people can start submitting for the April festival. We have a team of about 20 screeners that are the front line of seeing all the films that come in. They write reviews and score the films. I read all of those reviews. This year it was close to 2,500 reviews. There’s a whole process of tracking the films and deciding what goes away and what will continue up the ladder. By January we usually have about 250 films that we have to make decisions about and putting the big puzzle of the program. We are very dedicated to short films, we always have animation and short documentaries. The level of quality of what gets submitted has increased so much. EH: What is it about independent filmmaking that makes it unique? JF: Independent film gives you the opportunity to follow your own heart and story. The best films are following the filmmaker’s authenticity. They are not looking to fulfill a market niche. Of course everybody wants to be successful and find their audience. But that’s not what’s driving them to make their film. It’s a passion to tell stories. Even though narrative films have a script, the kinds of stories that are told are entering into lives that you don’t normally see on the screen. Most of the filmmakers I know are passionate about people and learning about the world, and are very curious and engaged. So it’s partly wanting to share that with an audience, but also having a curiosity about the world. Documentaries are the opportunity to engage with your subject in a world that you might have known nothing about, before you embark on the story. People go into making films with one idea of what the story will be, and life occurs, and things may change 180 degrees. It’s a wonderful experience to observe that discovery. EH: What makes a good film? JF: They’re all so different. It’s telling a good story. Storytelling is such a human connection: sharing human experiences. A good film makes you feel something. It’s one that you can just watch, not paying attention to the technical aspects of the film. If it engages you and makes you feel some emotion or another, a whole range: sadness, empathy, outrage, joy. There are so many emotions. If you can be caught up in that, that’s a successful film. I love that I can continue to be surprised every year by films that really make me feel that way. And I still want to just keep watching them and getting to know the filmmakers behind them. The filmmakers are amazing people. It’s really quite a group of amazing human beings.
