Brent St. Germain: It's risky to draft QBs early Comment By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com DailyTidings.com By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com Posted Apr. 22, 2015 at 8:14 AM By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com Posted Apr. 22, 2015 at 8:14 AM » Social News It’s no secret what it takes to get to the Super Bowl. Teams need quality coaching, a solid defense and a little luck to go their way. There is something else teams typically need — a franchise quarterback. Since its inception, the Super Bowl — for the most part — has featured teams with what can be considered franchise quarterbacks. The game has featured Pro Football Hall of Famers (Green Bay’s Bart Starr, Pittsburgh’s Terry Bradshaw and San Francisco’s Joe Montana), future Hall of Famers (Green Bay’s Brett Favre) and some of today’s best quarterbacks (New England’s Tom Brady, New Orleans’ Drew Brees, Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Denver’s Peyton Manning, who also went to the Super Bowl with Indianapolis). For many teams, the best way to get that franchise quarterback is through the draft. With the 2015 draft a little more than a week away, rumors are swirling on which teams will select potential franchise quarterbacks Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely take Winston with the draft’s overall top pick, but after that, it’s up in the air. The Tennessee Titans have the second overall pick and could either pick Mariota or deal the pick to another team looking for a quarterback. Winston and Mariota are at the top of most draft boards because they have the potential to be superstar players. But being selected in the first round doesn’t necessarily guarantee a trip to the Super Bowl. It’s no secret that the 1983 draft is considered one of the best in NFL history. Six quarterbacks were selected in the first round of that draft, including three Hall of Famers — Denver’s John Elway, Buffalo’s Jim Kelly and Miami’s Dan Marino. New England’s Tony Eason, a journeyman quarterback at best also selected in the first round in 1983, joined the trio in taking their respective teams to the Super Bowl. Since then, many teams have been looking for the next elite quarterback. Unfortunately, many have failed. Following the 1983 draft, 65 quarterbacks have been selected in the first round. Only four of those quarterbacks — Manning, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and Dallas’ Troy Aikman — won a Super Bowl with the team that originally drafted them, while New York Giants’ Eli Manning (San Diego) and Baltimore’s Trent Dilfer (Tampa Bay) won with another team. Getting to the Super Bowl is also no guarantee for first-round quarterbacks, as six other signal callers join that list, including Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb, Tennessee’s Steve McNair and New England’s Drew Bledsoe. In fact, you don’t even have to be a good quarterback to even get to the Super Bowl. Three journeyman quarterbacks — Eason, Dilfer and Kerry Collins (New York Giants) — one bust (Chicago’s Rex Grossman) had the supporting cast to make a surprising run to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, when it comes to picking quarterbacks in the first round, teams have a better chance finding a bust that a serviceable NFL player. Not counting players selected in recent drafts, more than 30 of the 65 quarterbacks selected in the first round since 1984 are considered busts, including Jacksonville’s Blaine Gabbert (2011), Oakland’s JaMarcus Russell (2007), Detroit’s Joey Harrington (2002), San Diego’s Ryan Leaf (1998) and Chuck Long (1986), San Francisco’s Jim Druckenmiller (1997) and Seattle’s Dan McGwire (1991). That’s a disturbing trend that teams want to avoid in any NFL draft. One bad move can result in years of misfortune and delay the rebuilding process. All of this talk brings me back to two players — Winston and Mariota. Will Winston and Mariota join the select few of quarterbacks picked in the first round to lead their team to a Super Bowl, or are they destined to become the latest in the growing list of busts? Only time will tell. Brent St. Germain is the sports editor of The Houma (La.) Courier and The Thibodaux (La.) Daily Comet. He can be reached by email at [email protected].
