Carola Lacy Ashland Maybe butterfly was lost I read about Leona's little blue butterfly in Sunday's Mail Tribune. Supposedly these creatures live only at Crater Lake, but I actually saw one in my backyard on Bear Creek in North Ashland. I got a really good look at it, because it landed on the back of my hand and sat there for about a minute. After reading your article, I'm thinking perhaps the sweet little thing was lost and trying to find its way back to the others at Crater Lake. Jessica Bryan Ashland Support HB 3470 The 1750s brought discovery and development of steam engines and coal burning. Then came electricity, oil and the internal combustion engine. Ingenuity led to the standard of living we now enjoy. Unfortunately, ignorance accompanied ingenuity. We have been warned that greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels since the early 1800s will likely have a warming impact, but we have consistently ignored these warnings. The chickens are coming home to roost as our planet warms, bringing climate chaos and threatening agriculture, forests and nature. Those of us lucky enough to have children and actual or potential grandchildren understand that a major responsibility we share is to provide them with a life at least as rewarding as that we have enjoyed. Looking at the climate trends we are experiencing, we realize an important step towards achieving this goal is to understand what is causing these trends and what we can do to reverse them. We also understand that it is inadequate to argue anything we do is inconsequential. For future generations, we must do whatever we can to reverse these trends. HB 3470 in the Oregon Legislature would cap statewide greenhouse gas emissions. Let’s urge our representatives to support this bill. Julia M. Rodríguez-Seidler Ashland Support Mt. Ashland Skiing is one of my passions and I feel very lucky to have a very great ski resort, Mt. Ashland, just 30 miles away. I’ve been skiing there for the past nine years and I’ve had excellent times skiing there (except of course when the mountain didn’t open two seasons ago). Regular readers know that Mt. Ashland is engaged in a fundraising effort. One purpose of this fundraising is to create more year-round activities at the mountain. This might mean a zip line among other things. Mt. Ashland is important to our community as an employer, a place to get out on the mountain in the winter and have fun, and soon, a place where we can have more fun in the fall, spring and summer. I would recommend you consider joining me and donating to Mt. Ashland’s fundraising effort. It doesn’t only help the mountain, it helps the entire community. Vanston Shaw Ashland Show Mt. Ashland support What a thrill it is to recall the thousands of kids who have experienced the joy of participating in winter sports on Mt. Ashland thhrough activities like the unique after-school ski and boarding program. Imagine the fond memories these youngsters carry with them as they move on with their lives and careers. How lucky we are to have this marvelous mountain in our own backyard. There is no doubt the awesome community support that has sustained Mt. Ashland for over 50 years will again come forward during the current fundraising effort to again show how dearly we appreciate our very own Mt. Ashland.
