One involved the City Council, one an educational opportunity for elementary-school girls and one the national reputation of Southern Oregon University. First, city councilors did exactly the right thing Tuesday night when they opted to start fresh next year in collecting the city's sales tax on prepared food from vendors at the Growers Market. The food vendors always had been required to collect the tax from customers and pass it on to the city, but the city had not tried to collect it for 20 years, and many vendors believed they were exempt. The council could have played hardball and gone after taxes the vendors never collected based on sales they didn't record, all for a relatively small amount of money, or it could write off that loss and start fresh Jan. 1, with everyone on the same page and vendors prepared to comply. The council rightly decided to take the simple route. Second, we were heartened by a special after-school program sponsored by Soroptimist International of Ashland that works to get girls interested in STEM careers and college majors. Girls are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math fields, but it's not for lack of ability. Bravo to the Soroptimists for stepping up to the challenge. Finally, we've said it before, but we'll say it again: The SOU football team has made its presence felt far beyond the Rogue Valley, and today will play for the NAIA  national championship in Florida.
