Fire sparks outside city By AMBER FOSSEN Ashland Daily Tidings A quick response by local fire crews thwarted a mid-morning fire today on Dead Indian Memorial Road. Fire District No. 5, Ashland Fire and Rescue, Oregon Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service crews responded to a blaze on the 2800 block of Dead Indian Memorial Road, about three miles east of city limits. The fire was reported at 9:59 a.m. by area residents who said the phone lines went dead and a brief power outage preceded the fire. Fire District No. 5 Chief Dan Marshall said it's too early to know if a surge prompted the fire. "Right now we don't know that," Marshall said. "The cause is still under investigation." As of press time, few details about the fire were available as fire crews continued to extinguish the smoldering grass. The fire scorched 3 to 5 acres of dry grass, according to Marshall. Nearby residents acted quickly, using their own water hoses to ward off the fire, which got within a hundred yards of a structure. Multiple engines, grass rigs and water tenders were called to the scene. A bulldozer remained staged at the end of Dead Indian Memorial Road but was not activated. Fire officials said the fire is contained as of press time.
