The Fellowship is home to a liberal, non-creedal religious and spiritual community of approximately 180 members. RVUUF is part of a long heritage of Unitarian Universalism, with core values in support of religious freedom and social justice. On Aug. 1, RVUUF joyfully welcomed a new minister, the Rev. Nan White, from Beaufort, S.C., where she started a Unitarian Universalist Church and ministered it for 15 years. She was a leader in civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Upon her departure, the congregation honored her by naming her "Minister Emerita." The Rev. White received a bachelor's degree in music education in 1974, a master's of religious education in 1980 and a master of divinity degree in 1991. She has been an active participant in the wider UU movement, including her past work as a member of the planning committee for the annual Unitarian Universalist General Assembly. (This large nationwide gathering of UU's will be held in Portland in June of 2015.) The Rev. White says her goal is to help the Fellowship build "beloved community" and to generate compassion in ways that promote peace and justice for all. She brings to the congregation a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. She is a highly engaging speaker with an infectious sense of humor, and her warmth and southern charm welcome all. RVUUF is known in the local community for its commitment to social justice issues. Support for the needs of the homeless population includes active involvement in the effort to provide winter shelter twice a week at Pioneer Hall. Commitment to supporting the LGBTQ community is shown by participation in October SO Pride events and hosting the Bodacious Rainbow Ball, held at RVUUF every February. Proceeds from this event have been donated to the Lotus Rising Project. The Rev. White, as a lesbian with a wife, identifies with the issues of the LGBTQ community. Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion with a long history and a deep regard for intellectual freedom, inclusive community and the search for spiritual growth. RVUUF seeks to provide an accepting community and spiritual haven in this ever-changing world. Sunday services in September focused on the theme of "Covenant," which means "to come together." Each Sunday, we explored a different aspect of covenant in our lives. The focus during October will be on coming home — to ourselves, to our congregation and to our earth. November's theme will be gratitude, for those who have gone before us and for personal and communal peace. All are welcome to attend the weekly worship service on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. The religious exploration (RE) program for children and youth, which includes nursery care, takes place at the same time. RVUUF is intentionally inclusive, welcoming people from all religious backgrounds and beliefs, embracing and appreciating people of every age, race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ability and economic circumstance.
