West nailed a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second OT and the Raiders never trailed again, narrowly avoiding what would have been a costly Cascade Conference home loss to win for the sixth time in their last seven games. The 12th-ranked Raiders (19-4, 9-3 CCC) appeared to have the game sewn up in the first overtime after Thompson sank a corner 3 and Corban’s Jordan Carter missed the first of two free throw attempts at the other end with 2 seconds left. Taylor Fox soared in to snag Carter’s second miss, however, and threw it up and in to force a second extra session. West had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Tim Weber 16 points, eight assists and four rebounds to lead Southern Oregon, which remained a game behind league-leading College of Idaho with six games to go for both. West scored 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting in the first half. Thompson added seven points and eight boards, and freshman guard Ben DeSaulnier 11 points and three rebounds. For Corban (11-10, 4-8), Cyrus Ward had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Carter 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Raiders led most of the way but the Warriors stormed back late in the second half to grab a five-point lead before SOU answered with a comeback of its own to send the game into OT. Cody Crowe made two free throws to give the Warriors a 49-44 lead with 5:57 to go in regulation, but the Raiders finished the second half on a 7-2 run, including DeSaulnier’s game-tying layup with 2:47 to go. That ended up being the last bucket of regulation, as both teams squandered opportunities to reclaim the lead in the last two minutes. Southern Oregon hosts another dangerous foe in Northwest Christian (14-6, 7-4) tonight. Women’s basketball Kristen Schoenherr scored 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds, leading 13th-ranked Southern Oregon to a 70-61 victory in Cascade Conference action Friday at Bob Riehm Arena. Autumn Durand added 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Ashley Claussen hit 4 of 6 3-pointers on her way to 17 points for the Raiders (18-3, 9-3 CCC), who took sole possession of second place in the Cascade Conference standings with six league games to go. Tara Van Weerdhuizen had 18 points, six rebounds and six blocks to pace Corban (14-10, 8-4). Boys basketball Collin Malcolm led Ashland with 15 points but Ashland stumbled at the start of the fourth quarter and fell to Marist 50-38 in a Midwestern Conference tilt Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym. After Walker Shibley-Styer hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three heading into the final frame the Grizzlies (9-7, 3-4 MWL) turned the ball over on their first four possessions of the fourth quarter and quickly fell behind by double digits. “We had to play catch-up from there and it was over,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. “Poor decision-making cost us.” Shibley-Styer scored nine points for Ashland, which hit 4 of 10 free throws. Austin Tyner scored 19 points to pace the Spartans (11-6, 4-3 MWL), who broke a tie with the Grizzlies in the league standings and completed a season series sweep. Girls Basketball At Eugene, Ashland’s offensive lapses on consecutive possessions late in the fourth quarter allowed Marist Catholic to stretch its lead to 10 and pull away for a 39-34 victory on Friday. Georgia Williams registered 15 points and six rebounds while teammate Michaela Dunn tossed in 13 points for the Grizzlies (7-10, 0-7 Midwestern League).
