You would be forgiven for not noticing, because the event happened in 1700. The event was a massive Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, estimated at magnitude 8.7 to 9.2. No written records exist from this part of the world at that time, but the event was noted in the oral histories of native people. In Japan, written records indicate the tsunami that resulted from the quake here devastated that country's rice crop stored in warehouses. The 315th anniversary is significant because seismologists say a quake of that size occurs in the Northwest roughly every 300 years, and some experts believe we are overdue — especially toward the southern end of the subduction zone that stretches from Vancouver Island to northern California. That means us. The subduction zone is the area where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate is diving beneath the North American Plate, on which we perch. If the offshore plate moves suddenly, it could destroy buildings, highways and utilities far inland, and trigger a tsunami that could bring water 100 feet high sweeping into the coastline. State emergency management officials urge Oregonians to prepare themselves, because there will be little help available after a quake of that magnitude. Most important, don't brush this off.
