Municipal President (Mayor) Luis Fernando Gutiérrez Márquez officially delivered the truck on Feb. 11 to the Guanajuato Volunteer Fire Department. It had arrived earlier in the week after being transported overland from Ashland. Standing with more than 20 city officials and civic leaders in front of the bright-red truck at the fire station, Gutiérrez Márquez said, “This truck is of great utility for us, because the firemen perform more than 1,000 actions a year and this fire engine will expand coverage for the benefit of the citizenry even more.” Gutiérrez Márquez said the engine was the third vehicle donated by Ashland to the Guanajuato firemen. “We’re expecting to lay the first stone in June for a new fire station that will carry the name of Ashland in gratitude for all its support,” he said. He expressed emotion at realizing 2015 is the 46th year of close Sister City relations between the two cities. The mayor invited Rick Cornelius, an Ashland Amigo Club member temporarily living in Guanajuato, to attend the ceremony in representation of Guanajuato’s sister city. Purchased 25 years ago for $190,000, the 15-ton engine, known as “old 88-eleven,” would be worth about $20,000 in resale value in the United States. Daniel Barrera, director general of public works in Guanajuato, said during a visit to Ashland in January that the moderately sized truck is a perfect fit for Guanajuato’s narrow and winding streets, many of them underground.
