The wealth of our forests has supported us up to this point of reckoning: What we have left still gives us watershed, beauty that sustains us, and provides the only remaining habitat for the millions of wild creatures, from large animals and fish to the microscopic ones whose interdependence creates and maintains these wild places. There isn't much wilderness left. If we don't stand up and say no to those thinking of short-term profit, soon we'll be wondering what happened to all the trees. 1) Right now, in the Biscuit fire area of the Siskiyou National Forest; old-growth areas are targeted for the logging of 500 million board feet of timber! The plan is not to restore the forest, but to take hundreds of thousands of trees, 18" in diameter and larger, the fire-resistant ones. Forest Service: 618-2200. 2) If you hike along the Rogue River, you probably pass through the Zane Grey roadless area where the Medford BLM has decided to cut hundreds of acres of ancient trees. If the BLM goes ahead, it won't look the same next time you're there. This cut is called the Kelsey-Whiskey timber sale. Just because it's been given a name doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. BLM: 479-7244. 3) 34,000 acres of Klamath National Forest in the Russian Wilderness roadless are targeted for roads and logging. This land provides a wildlife corridor to the Trinity Alps Wilderness, a range which animals need to survive since they can't just hike in to their local grocery store meat department. Forest Service: 618-2200. I urge readers to write or call the Forest Service and BLM offices to stop the destructive cuts. Whatever your view on this, please weigh in at these agencies, so that decisions about the use of our forests are not dominated by the companies in a position to profit from them. Because, once these wild areas are gone, they're gone. The "investigation" of his charitable works is a good example of how the so-called Patriot Act diminishes our civil liberties.
