Laid-back Liam Neeson and Ed Harris get vicious in 'Run All Night' Comment By Ed Symkus More Content Now DailyTidings.com By Ed Symkus More Content Now Posted Mar. 9, 2015 at 9:40 AM By Ed Symkus More Content Now Posted Mar. 9, 2015 at 9:40 AM » Social News Even after a couple of decades of interviewing actors, there’s still often a bit of pop culture shock when you see a movie that features characters doing vicious, heinous things, and shortly after, chat with the actors who played them, but find them to be soft-spoken and laid back. That was the case with Liam Neeson and Ed Harris, who co-star in “Run All Night,” a story of two longtime friends who, through unavoidable circumstances, become irreconcilable enemies. The film, set in Manhattan, focuses on mobster Shawn Maguire (Harris), who’s trying to clean up his act, and Maguire’s former hitman Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), who’s become haunted by the violent life he’s been leading. Both characters are fathers, but neither of them could be considered role models. When a crime-related situation goes spinning out of control, and one of the men kills the other’s son, their relationship goes south and ignites a series of events that make for a gritty, tension-filled film, and some excellent performances, especially when Neeson and Harris are onscreen together. The two actors sat down for a relaxed discussion about the film earlier this week in a small hotel room in New York. Q: Since this is the first time you acted together in a film, did you have to go through a getting to know each other process? Neeson: We’ve been joking about having to go out and play golf together, and get to know each other, which didn’t happen at all. Ed thinks a bit like myself. We try and leave the ego outside the door, and just get on with it. We loved the script, we loved the words. They work. Don’t want to change them. Let’s just do it. Ed has a huge amount of experience. I have some, too. So we just trusted that what we bring to the table is enough for these characters. Harris: I wanted to do the picture because I wanted to work with Liam. I’ve respected him so much over the years, so it was a total pleasure. Q: This is a very tense and violent film, but it’s also got a lot of heart. What would you say to a prospective viewer about that? Harris: I think the heart of the matter is the relationship between our two characters. These guys have known each other since they were children in this community, the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York. They grew up through an incredibly brutal time in the’60s, survived that, and have been together ever since. They’re both probably still alive because of each other. At the beginning of the film, I’m trying to be somewhat of a legitimate businessman, and Liam’s character is kind of on the outs. He’s suffering from what he’s done in the past, things he done for me, actually. I’m trying to help him out a little bit, and then this incident happens, and everything changes. Neeson: Ed and I were talking about this. There’s this weird camaraderie, a gung ho, male club thing. Once you’ve established those rules for your society, you don’t break them. You killed my son, I have to kill your son. You killed two of mine, I have to kill three of yours. It’s throughout history, isn’t it? It’s all the way back to King Arthur’s Round Table. It’s like in “Game of Thrones.” Q: Are you both “Game of Thrones” fans? Neeson: I do watch it, yeah. Harris: We’re pretty addicted to it at home. Q: Did you get a lot of direction in this film, or did director Jaume Collet-Serra just trust you to go with your instincts as actors? Neeson: I love being directed. Harris: I love being directed, too. I really liked working with Jaume. He would say things that would help. I don’t remember any particular little thing, but between take one, two, three, there were little notes and thoughts: Think about this, try this. Neeson: Jaume and I have now worked together three times (“Unknown,” “Non-Stop”). I’ll tell you exactly what he does as a director, with an actor, which I think is wonderful. Rather than say, “Speak a bit faster” or “Could we do that quicker,” there was one time when he came over to me and said, “You know, I think your character is feeling very old at this moment.” He’d just leave that with you, and it influences the scene you’re about to do, and whatnot. That’s inspiring for me. I love hearing that kind of stuff. And you don’t hear it with directors every day. Harris: You’re trying to fulfill his vision, in a way. You don’t have an audience when you’re making a film, but if you’re performing for anybody, it’s for him. And he responds in a way that’s very effective and helpful.
