LOCAL ROUNDUP Hits just keep on coming Ashland softball team continues offensive splurge with rout of Springfield Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 9, 2015 at 8:46 PM Updated Apr 10, 2015 at 11:47 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 9, 2015 at 8:46 PM Updated Apr 10, 2015 at 11:47 AM » Social News Twenty-four hours after the Ashland High softball team suffered through a rare off day at the plate the Grizzlies returned to their hard-hitting ways and easily avoided what would have been their first two-game losing streak of the season. Georgia Williams and Teresa Lehman erupted at the plate to lead Ashland’s 11-hit barrage as the Grizzlies beat the Millers 11-0 in five innings Thursday in a Midwestern League romp at North Mountain Park. Williams went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Lehman 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and also scored three times and Grace Lenthe and Gianni Pippa-Baker also had two hits apiece as Ashland (9-3, 3-1) responded to its first league loss by picking up its fourth mercy-rule win of the season. Williams also struck out eight and surrendered only two hits in five innings to pick up the win in the circle. She retired the first 10 batters she faced, four on strikes, and walked two. Ashland’s hitting prowess was the story of the game again, as the Grizzlies have now scored eight runs or more in eight of their 12 games and rank first in Class 5A softball with 99 runs scored. They brought out the sticks early this time. After Lehman and Hannah Teixiera both reached base to start the game Williams crushed an 0-2 pitch over the wall in center field to give the Grizzlies a quick 3-0 lead. Things only got worse for the visitors in the second. After Lehman was hit by a pitch and Teixiera walked, Williams singled to load the bases. That brought up Lenthe, and the senior shortstop delivered a double to right-center that scored two runs and upped Ashland’s lead to 6-0. Lenthe came home on Pippa-Baker’s double to left. Teixiera added an RBI single in the third to make it 9-0 and Lehman’s two-run double to left in the fourth completed the scoring. Lenthe was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Pippa-Baker 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. For Springfield (1-7, 0-3), Jessica Dempsey and Lianna Lyons both went 1-for-2. Springfield pitcher Emily Gaffney was tagged for nine earned runs in five innings. She struck out six, walked two and hit three batters. Norvell, who won a state championship in March two years after picking up the sport, joins a program coached by her former high school coach, Tony Champion. “This was a very important signing for us because she’s a local, a very good athlete and such a well-rounded, nice person,” Champion said. “This is a person who is loved at her school, was part of the homecoming court and can go wherever she wants. It’s a great start and a good sign for the program.” Norvell has proven to be a gifted all-around athlete at Ashland High, competing in gymnastics, soccer and on the track and field team as a pole-vaulter. She plans to major in health and physical education at SOU. “The thought of wrestling in college was really exciting for me and something I couldn’t have imagined as an option not too long ago,” she said. “Being around coach [Champion] the last two years, I know it’s going to be a lot of fun.”   By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Apr. 9, 2015 at 8:46 PM Updated Apr 10, 2015 at 11:47 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
