The Ashland High football team scored eight touchdowns in the first 20 minutes and held Eagle Point scoreless until the final play of the game en route to a 62-6 Midwestern League victory on Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field. The Grizzlies scored on a 12-yard fumble return by Stenley Graham, a 28-yard interception return by Theo Whitcomb and a blocked punt recovery in the end zone by Chance Swenson in a game that saw the mercy-rule running clock kick in after Ashland increased its lead to 48-0 only halfway through the second quarter. The lopsided victory allowed the Grizzlies (7-2, 3-2 MWL), who were already locked in as the league’s No. 3 seed to the upcoming Class 5A state playoffs, to convincingly say goodbye to their two-game losing streak and head into the postseason on a high note. First-round pairings will be released soon at osaa.org, but Ashland, which dropped to No. 11 in the power rankings late Friday, will probably open the postseason on the road Nov. 7. Eagle Point (0-9, 0-5) finishes its season as one of three winless teams in 5A football. In the league’s first-place showdown in Eugene, Springfield earned a comeback win over Marist to claim the MWL championship. The fun started early for the Grizzlies when Ryne Robitz scored on a 19-yard sweep seven minutes into the game to cap a 36-yard drive. Ashland made it 13-0 moments later when Graham scooped up Chance McMullen’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Nicky Weinberg scored on an 18-yard reverse to make it 20-0, and Tucker Atteberrry’s 5-yard quarterback keeper made it 27-0 with still 1:45 to go in the opening quarter. In only got worse from there for the visitors, who surrendered 445 points this season. Robitz added to the highlight reel when he scored on a 47-yard touchdown run, and barely a minute later Swenson recovered his own punt block in the end zone to give the Grizzlies a 55-0 halftime lead. Robitz needed only five carries to gain 85 yards on the ground, while Kiowa Jayne rushed for 47 yards. Atteberry and Kyle Weinberg combined to complete 6 of 9 passes for 62 yards, as the Grizzlies tried their best to keep the score respectable. Ashland’s defense was suffocating, limiting the Eagles to 148 yards of total offense and forcing three fumbles. Weinberg kick) E – Lorenz pass from Page Women’s Volleyball At Caldwell, Idaho, Southern Oregon pulled out another five-set thriller and climbed within a win of clinching the Cascade Conference regular-season title outright with a 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 18-16 victory over the College of Idaho on Friday at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. The 11th-ranked Raiders (20-3, 14-1 CCC) can clinch their first league title since 2010 with a win tonight at Eastern Oregon (23-3, 13-2) in the regular-season finale for both teams. On Friday, Southern Oregon appeared in control after taking the first two sets, but the Coyotes climbed back into the match and even managed another mini comeback in the fifth after SOU scored the first four points. The final set featured eight ties, but it was the Raiders who prevailed once again, clinching the match on a kill by Ashland High alum Sam Boehnke. It was SOU’s third five-set victory during its current 10-match win streak and fifth five-set win overall. Sophomore middle blocker Emma Gasman led the Raiders with 18 kills, setter Lauren McGowne had 56 assists and outside hitter Motade Atanda had 16 kills. Paulla Pinheiro added 11 kills and 26 digs. Men’s Basketball No. 17-ranked Southern Oregon had four players in double figures and jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 98-86 season-opening win over New Hope Christian in the opening day of the Flagship Inn Classic on Friday at Bob Riehm Arena. Eric Thompson had 25 points and 14 rebounds and Tim Weber had 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists to help the Raiders rebound from Monday’s exhibition loss at Humboldt State. Also for SOU, Jacob Kaler scored 19, Jordan West had 15 points and seven boards and Brennan Rakoz added eight points off the bench. Southern Oregon, which hosts Menlo tonight, hit 22 of 39 shots in the first half and used a 16-0 run to take control. Women’s Basketball Alexi Smith had 17 points and eight rebounds as No. 21 Southern Oregon pulled away in the second half for a 90-74 season-opening win over University of California Merced Friday at Bob Riehm Arena. Carly Meister added 15 points and eight boards, Autumn Durand 14 points and five assists and Ashley Claussen 11 assist for the Raiders, who extended a four-point lead to 15 in a key six-minute stretch of the second half.
