COLLEGE WRESTLING Raiders tied for third, Gutches two wins from four-peat at NAIA nationals No. 1 Grand View in control; Gutches scores two pins Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Four Southern Oregon wrestlers, including three-time defending 174-pound national champion Brock Gutches, advanced to the semifinals, leading the Raiders into a tie for third place in the team standings in the first day of the NAIA national championships Friday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan. Gutches, Tyler Cowger (149 pounds), Dalton Urrutia (157) and Charles Johnson (197) each pulled out quarterfinal victories Friday night and two more Raiders – Garrett Urrutia (165) and Jacob Abrams (184) – have also locked up All-American honors with fourth-round consolation victories. “We’ve got six All-Americans right now, so there are still some pretty good-sized points to be had,” SOU coach Mike Ritchey said of the Raiders’ national title hopes. “So we can do some work now. We haven’t made our life easy, but I’m not going to count us out.” No. 1 View is in great position to clinch its fourth straight national title, leading the field by a healthy margin with 83 points and advancing six wrestlers to the semis. Second-place Great Falls has 64 points and five semifinalists, and Southern Oregon and Lindsey Wilson are right behind with 62. Gutches quickly climbed within two wins of a rare four-peat, which has never been done in his weight class. He pinned 13th-ranked David Fenton of Missouri Valley in 4 minutes, 27 seconds, then did the same to eighth-ranked Tyler Brown of Dickinson State in 1:10. “Brock’s looking good,” Ritchey said. But Ritchey added that Gutches (31-3) could have a battle on his hands this morning when he squares off against second-ranked Thomas Moman of Grand View. Moman (33-2) earned a 12-6 decision in the second round before edging 10th-ranked Tyler McMichael of Midland 3-2 in the quarters. “(Gutches) has a tough match in the morning against a Grand View kid, and they’re always tough to beat,” Ritchey said. Cowger blanked 15th-ranked Victor Thomas of Wayland Baptist 6-0 in a second-round match and survived a scare from 11th-ranked Dallas Brown of Life University to win 2-1. Cowger, ranked fourth, will be an underdog when he takes on top-ranked Jake Ekster of Missouri Valley in today’s semis. With no first-round bye, third-ranked Dalton Urrutia needed to win three matches to advance to the semis and did so each time by decision. He started his day with a 7-5 win over Jonathan Blackwell of Bethany, followed that up with a 5-1 win over 16th-ranked Joseph Weber of Briar Cliff and edged ninth-ranked Nick Haugen of Baker 7-6. Next, he’ll face seventh-ranked Sean Elkins of Dickinson State in today’s semifinal round. Johnson, ranked third, was dominant most of the day. He won a 6-1 decision in the first round, then scored back-to-back pins over 11th-ranked Brandon Sunday and 16th-ranked Logan Paul Eickhoff, the latter requiring only 28 seconds, to cruise into the final four. There, he’ll face top-ranked Hudson Buck (27-1) of Dickinson State for a berth in the finals. “He’s got a couple cowboy moves he can throw at you once in a while,” Ritchey said of Johnson, who improved to 29-5. Eighth-ranked Garrett Urrutia won a 9-3 decision over Oliver Bruckardt to advance to the quarterfinals, but fell to seventh-ranked Michael Nord of Jamestown, 6-3. Urrutia bounced back with a 3-1 victory over 13th-ranked Nico Martinez in the consolation bracket and can still place as high as third with three more wins today. Abrams, ranked 10th, lost a tough 3-2 decision to third-ranked Derek Sivertsen of Oklahoma City in the quarters but rebounded with a 3-1 decision over teammate and fourth-ranked Ryan McWatters in the consolation bracket. Ritchey said SOU’s title hopes are slim, but still in play. “We need to maximize our possibilities tomorrow to have a chance,” he said. “I was hoping we’d get one more semifinalist. I was thinking we needed eight (All-Americans) to be in contention right now. I’m not saying it’ll take a miracle, but everything’s going to have to fall just right for us tomorrow.” Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-821-0829 or [email protected].
