--> --> Briscoe kids knock on doors for UNICEF By Maggie McGehee Ashland Daily Tidings Halloween is no longer about going door to door for candy, at least not for Briscoe Elementary School students who will be trick or treating for UNICEF. Each year Bellview students participate in the "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" program by carrying UNICEF boxes with them while seeking treats for the holiday and asking for donations to help children overseas. This year the money will go to children in Afghanistan, who are in desperate need of immunizations, clothing, education materials and other everyday commodities Americans take for granted. "I like helping them because we are a rich country, and we can afford to help them," said Briscoe third-grader Kathryn Reynolds, 8. "Other kids should have clean water and food to eat and medical care." Reynolds and other Briscoe students said they were excited about lending a hand to the less fortunate. "It's important to help other people so they can stay well and be healthy," 9-year-old Briscoe third grader Yeruti Estigarribia said. "We are getting money for kids around the world that don't have water and a lot of food." Briscoe has been participating in the program for years, and have raised more than $1,000 in past years, and each year their efforts astonish Briscoe Principal Jeff Schlect. "Our children always want to do something," Schlect said. "It gives them the opportunity of helping this world. It's their chance, their opportunity to feel good about being active in support of relieving world hunger. It's very sincere and it magnifies their pure intentions. They want to share what they have and give what they have and that is so wonderful." All Briscoe students will be participating in the program this year along with four sixth-grade classes at Ashland Middle School. Briscoe third-grader Taylor Smith, 8, said she was eager to do anything that would help other people. "We are collecting the money to help children around the world who are in need of food and medical supplies," she said. "I am helping because I like to help other people and children. I feel excited that I can help other kids." Only 10 percent of the money raised through the "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" program will go toward administrative costs, the rest of the money raised will be used to provide supplies to children in Afghanistan, officials said.
