City officials should resist the temptation to hide behind lawyers and insurance adjusters and do the right thing, now. In a dramatic demonstration of the old adage that sewage flows downhill, a sewer line on Morton Street apparently became blocked during maintenance work. Caroline Shaffer, who lives at the bottom of the steepest part of Morton, said sewage began shooting out of the main-floor toilet in her family's home at 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday and didn't stop for more than four hours. The house is uninhabitable, and will be for months as workers remove walls, floors, subfloors and maybe soil from beneath the house as well before rebuilding at a cost still to be determined. Meanwhile, Shaffer has had to replace destroyed audio recording equipment with which she earns her living, and the family will have to rent indefinitely while the repairs continue. The city's insurance carrier likely will end up paying for the damage, but it's not clear how long it will take to work that out. City officials are being tight-lipped about the situation, noting the family has hired an attorney. It's hard to imagine that the city is not liable for the damage to Shaffer's house, and officials should step up now to begin compensating this family for a disaster that they could neither have prevented nor foreseen.
