--> --> Prescribed burn in Applegate Ashland Daily Tidings Residents concerned about smoke on the horizon can rest assured. The Bureau of Land Management is conducting prescribed burning in the Applegate Valley west of Ashland. An 88-acre woodland area in Sterling Creek was ignited Thursday, three miles northwest of Anderson Butte. The smoke from the fire was visible in Medford and parts of the southern Rogue Valley, prompting call to local police and fire agencies. Burning operations are again planned for today, weather permitting. In addition, some pile burning is scheduled in the Merlin area today and possibly Saturday. BLM officials are conducting the controlled burns to improve the health of the areas and maintain vegetation in a less hazardous condition, said Karen Gillespie, BLM public affairs officer. The burns help lower brush densities and reduce ladder fuels in the forested areas, she said, making later wildfires easier to control.
