Wood Doris "Dody" Regina Wood, 85, died Monday, December 22, 2003 at her residence in Medford. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 3rd at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 745 N. 10th St., Central Point. Pastor Herbert Percy will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Deaf Missions, in care of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Doris was born October 5, 1918 in Colome, South Dakota, daughter of Walter Addison and Lilla Regina Olsen Wood. Doris became deaf in early infancy from spinal meningitis. She acquired a 12-year education at the South Dakota School for the Deaf, where she became proficient in speech and lip reading. Her deafness inspired her sister, Wilma L. Jahn to become a teacher of the deaf, teaching many deaf children here in the Rogue Valley. Prior to World War II, Doris worked as a typist in Luverne, MN. During the war, she was employed by the U.S. Government Ordnance District, Small Arms Division, of the Army Service Department in Detroit, MI. She then moved to San Francisco, CA, and served in various positions at I Magnin and the Emporium. She relocated to Oakland, CA and was employed by the Social Security Administration for 25 years, until her retirement. There she operated IBM computers with skill and efficiency, earning the honor of the Most Valuable Handicapped Employee of the Year. At that time, computers were fairly new, and she was pleased to be part of their enormous influence in the business world. Always a firm believer in her Christian faith, she was an inspiration to others. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church. She was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church in Colome, SD, and was confirmed in 1937. While living in the Bay area, she was a member of the Lutheran Church for Deaf in Oakland. Doris had an adventuresome spirit. She traveled extensively around the United States with her parents and on her own. She particularly loved to drive her car around the Bay area. She also traveled to Hawaii and several European countries with other deaf people and an interpreter. She loved hiking, camping, and the ocean and mountains. But most of all, at any given opportunity, and especially during holidays, she loved being with her extended family. She was a most beloved member of the family and will be greatly missed. Survivors include her sister, Wilma Jahn of Medford; brother, Reverend Harold Wood of O'Neill, Nebraska; nieces, Julie Santillie of Medford, Sue Ritter of Pullman, WA, Betsy Brown of Corvallis, and Pam Illies of Chanhassen, MN; nephews, Philip Jahn of Grangeville, ID, and James Wood of Maplewood, MN; and numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Eric (Arik) O. Skoog. Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford. Dorothy 'Dottie' L. Earhart Dorothy "Dottie" Lee Earhart, 86, died December 25, 2003 in North Bend. She was born May 19, 1917 in Pineland, TX to Milton "Mike" O. Kelley and Carrie Lee "Pat" Buckley. A long-time resident of Medford, Dorothy was active in volunteer work, both at the Medford Visitor's Center and Providence Hospital, and had worked as the assistant manager of the Spring Street Apartments. She moved to the Coos Bay area in 2000 due to failing health. Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael Raymond of Coos Bay; grandchildren, Michelle Brewer of Tillamook, Kevin Raymond of New Meadows, ID, Andrew Raymond of Monroe, WA, Kim Hicker and Bev Beaird of Seattle,WA, Matthew McKail of Everett, WA., and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by a son, John Scott Raymond. At Dorothy's request, no services will be held. Her remains will be interred at Siskiyou Memorial Park. Emma L. Denyer Emma L'Aguivoise Parr Denyer, 85, died Saturday evening, December 13, 2003 at the Jennings-McCall Center in Forest Grove, Oregon. A memorial service will be held at a future time in Forest Grove. Emma L'Aguivoise Parr Denyer was born February 15, 1918 to William Francis Parr and Florence Mae Reed Parr in Terry, Montana. Her parents were Montana homesteaders who found their way to Oregon's Willamette Valley and ultimately settled in Turner. Emma Parr graduated from Turner High School in 1935. As a student, she loved basketball and once told her daughters that she dreamed of playing professional ball. She rode the school bus to high school, and her future husband, Russell Hall Denyer, was the bus driver. We like to think that he proposed to her on Christmas Day 1936 after seeing the Marx Brothers in "A Night at the Opera." They were married July 8, 1938. Russell Denyer preceded her in death and rests at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford, where Emma's cremains will also be placed. Emma and Russell created three daughters: Pauline Flanagan, Caroline Gallacci, and Bonita Kennedy. While the children were still in the nest, she did everything that mothers do to nurture the three active girls. The daughters survive Emma, as do grandchildren Tim and Heather Flanagan, and Geoffrey and Ryan Kennedy. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Kiera and Arwin Rudden Flanagan, and Logan Flanagan. Other survivors include her sister, Charlotte Parr; cousin, Jerry Reed and her sister-in-law, Emma Denyer Hammer. Her extended family also includes Julia Rudden, Candice Kennedy, Ron Karabaich, and Rebecca Bowers, along with many who are a part of the Masonic fraternity. Emma Denyer spent over 60 years of service as a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a life member of Victoria Chapter #76 in Turner, and Meridian Chapter #179 in Eugene, where she was a past Worthy Matron. Emma was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, and contributed her time to Job Daughters. Our mother loved to travel, which is probably a good thing since keeping up with her husband took her to such places as Schenectady, New York, Las Vegas, NV, in addition to Portland, Salem, Corvallis, and Medford. When our father died, Emma and her sister, Charlotte combined resources and lived together in Eugene. There, Emma was able to engage in her passion for landscaping by creating what might have been suburban Eugene's only English garden. The family thanks and deeply appreciates Charolotte Parr and the Jennings-McCall Center for all of the attention given to Emma when we were not able to be in Forest Grove. Emma could not have asked for a more devoted sister than Charlotte. The sympathetic care given our mother throughout her stay at Jennings-McCall was absolutely wonderful. The family suggests that those who wish to remember Emma, may make contributions to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Endowment Fund, 2221 Oak Street, Forest Grove, Oregon 97116 or to Doctors Without Borders, or to a charity of one's choice. Forest Grove Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. 503-357-3126 Joe Carpenter Joe Carpenter, 67, of Eugene, died December 26, 2003. Joe was a Spanish teacher at Medford Mid High and South Medford High School. After his retirement he lived briefly in Ashland before moving to Eugene where he lived, loved, and played. His many friends will miss him. Paul O. Neumann Paul O. Neumann, 83, of Central, point died December 28, 2003 at a retirement center. No services are planned. Mr. Neumann was born December 25, 1920 in Denver, CO. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Forestry and worked as a Timber Cruiser. Mr. Neumann moved to the Rogue Valley area in 1990 from Walla Walla, WA. Survivors include: two brothers, Carl Neumann of Central Point and Kenneth Neumann of Burlingame, CA; five nephews and several great nieces and great nephews. Arrangements are with Perl Funeral Home. Poppy Emelie Caldwell The Funeral service for Poppy Emelie (Helb) Caldwell will be held Wednesday, December 31 at 3 p.m. at Memory Gardens Chapel. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Avenue, Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504; or American Diabetes Association, 380 SE Spokane Street, Suite 110, Portland, OR 975202. She lived in the Rogue Valley from 1957 to 1990's and has been living in the Tigard area for the past 5 years. She attended Phoenix Presbyterian Church and attended Tigard Presbyterian Church. In 1957, she attended Medford Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of Rosarian, Toastmasters, Garden Club, Orchid Club and liked to square dance. She worked as a nurse for Providence Hospital, retiring after 30 year. She is preceded in death by her husbands, William E. Caldwell and Sievert Solberg. In 1957, she entered the United States from the Netherlands with her first husband, Leonard G. Vermeulen and their 5 daughters who survive. Survivors include: daughters, Jeannette Fry of Tigard, Eugenie F. M. Holt of Bellevue, WA, Sonja Bell of Portland, Charlotte Vermeulen of Sacramento, CA, and Leonie Netherland of Medford; sisters, Ida Brink and Ellie Coentraad, both of The Netherlands; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford. 'Skookie' Watson The graveside service for Ileene "Skookie" Watson will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Mrs. Watson, 93, of Trail, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 2003) at Three Fountains Nursing Center, Medford. Memorial Contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Rd., Medford, OR 97504 or Leukemia Foundation, 6501 SW Macadam, Portland, OR 97201. She was born Nov. 28, 1910 in Chandler, North Dakota to Cortez "Cordy" C. and Anna R. (Baker) Elliott. On June 16, 1946 in Brookings, she married John G. Watson, who preceded her in death in 1978. She came to the Rogue Valley in 1937. Mrs. Watson served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. She was a retired school teacher and taught in Medford and Prospect for about 40 years. Survivors include her sister, Eva Johnson of Trail, Oregon.
