PLAYOFF TIME Four local teams brace for do or die games Ashland boys soccer team to host first-round game Wednesday By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 3, 2014 @ 7:57 pm By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 3, 2014 @ 7:57 pm » Social News Win and the season continues. Lose and it’s over. For four local teams this week, it’s that simple. The Ashland High girls soccer team will be the first to face a do-or-die scenario today when it travels north for a Class 5A first-round playoff tilt against Corvallis. The round of 16 game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state quarterfinals against either 15th-seeded Springfield or second-seeded Bend on Saturday. The AHS boys soccer team begins its postseason Wednesday at home, the Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team will be at Corban on Thursday and the AHS football team will be on the road Friday. The Grizz girls (10-3-1) are seeded 10th after finishing second in the Midwestern League, and the Spartans (7-4-2) are seeded seventh after winning the Mid-Willamette Conference. Both teams are on a roll. The Grizzlies have won eight of 10 since starting the season 2-2, and Corvallis has won six straight and hasn’t lost since McMinnville dropped the Spartans to 0-4 back on Sept. 18. The Ashland High boys soccer team is seeded fifth and will host 12th-seeded Liberty at 3 p.m. Wednesday at North Mountain Park. The winner will face either fourth-seeded Woodburn or 13th-seeded Marist on Saturday. Ashland beat Marist 2-1 on Oct. 17. The Grizzlies (9-5) used a six-game win streak in the middle of the season to take charge of the Midwestern League and clinched the conference title with a 2-1 win over Springfield on Oct. 25. Ashland’s done it with defense. The Grizzlies’ goal total of 30 is less than half that of any other league champion, but they’ve only allowed 15. Liberty (7-6-2) finished fourth in the Northwest Oregon Conference and has won five of its last seven. The Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team will square off against Corban at 1 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the six-team Cascade Conference tournament. Links to a live streaming broadcast and live stats will be available at souraiders.com. The Raiders (5-10-1) finished sixth in the 10-team conference and will need to pull off three upsets in the CCC tourney in order to qualify for the NAIA national championships. Corban (10-6-2), the No. 3 seed, beat SOU 1-0 on Oct. 4. The Ashland High football team was ranked No. 2 in the state for most of the season but suffered consecutive losses to Springfield and Marist to finish third in the Midwestern League. The late-season stumble cost the Grizzlies a home playoff game. Instead, 10th-seeded Ashland (7-2) will travel north for a round of 16 game Friday against seventh-seeded Hillsboro (8-1), the Northwest Oregon Conference co-champions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hare Field. Links to live stats and possibly live video will be available at ashlandfootballclub.com. Hillsboro opened the season with eight straight wins before suffering a 12-0 loss on Halloween night to Wilsonville. The Ashland-Hillsboro winner will face either 15th-seeded Pendleton or second-seeded Silverton in the quarterfinals the following week. Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-776-4469 or [email protected].
