The commission advises the mayor and City Council on matters relating to the management, operation and development of the Ashland Airport; investigates federal, state, county and private funding for airport improvements; and reviews and recommends project applications for funding to the City Council. Butler has nearly 30 years of experience working for the Federal Aviation Administration in controller, staff and managerial positions in Utah, Colorado, Washington and Alaska. He also served for a year as a technical analyst and writer at the Office of Runway Safety in Anchorage, Alaska. Butler also was a tenured assistant professor of aviation technology at University of Alaska, Anchorage.  Brim is a graduate of Ashland High School and attended Southern Oregon State College for two years. He has been a commercial pilot since 1985 and owns Brim Aviation, a helicopter company that offers services like air rescue systems, pipeline construction, airborne law enforcement and sightseeing. Bill Emery was appointed to the Historic Commission with a term ending April 30, 2017. The commission was established in the early '70s to survey and recommend to the City Council areas or properties with historical value and research how to protect them in order to maintain the city's links with the past. Emery was a general contractor from 1995 to 2009 and has been a residential designer since 2006 with experience remodeling historic homes. His design work on local properties has received three awards — one in 2013 and two in 2014 — from the Historic Commission.  The city also has vacancies on the Ashland Fire Mitigation Commission, Tree Commission and Public Arts Commission . Those interested in volunteering with these commissions must submit a letter of interest and completed application to the City Recorder's Office.
