ODF officials said engine crews found one fire burning in the Sugar Pine Flat area, four miles northwest of Butte Falls. It had grown to a quarter-acre by the time firefighters arrived, but crews were able to put it out before it expanded. The other fire was near Vine Maple Creek, about six miles south of Prospect. That fire was confined to a single tree, making it difficult for crews to find. "It's entirely possible it burned itself out," Ballou said. Smoke columns also were reported in the Cobleigh Road and Elk Creek Road areas. Engine crews were investigating, though no other fires were reported in Jackson County overnight. A Grants Pass ODF unit responded to a half-acre fire near Provolt, which since has been extinguished. The cause is not yet known. At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service reported 350 lightning strikes over a 24-hour period in northeastern Jackson County. A stretch of cooler temperatures is expected into Saturday. High temperatures are forecast to plummet to the mid- to low-70s by week's end in Jackson County. Until then, wildland firefighters are watching for additional lightning-sparked blazes around the area.
