MOVIE REVIEW 'Wild Tales' is twisted, dark and lovely Comment By Chris Honoré for Revels DailyTidings.com By Chris Honoré for Revels Posted May. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Chris Honoré for Revels Posted May. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Wild Tales; subtitles; 115 min; rated R   “Wild Tales” is a complete surprise — creative, dark, comedic, over-the-top and a recent Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is an anthology of six completely unrelated vignettes, each outrageous, unruly (or not), but all, in some way, touching on the idea that revenge/payback is a story best served cold (or not). Each episode is stylish, many encapsulating how difficult it can be to live in the 21 st century (no matter which city) while delineating what can occur when ordinary people reach their meltdown point. An example: A demolition engineer parks in front of a bakery. He’s picking up a cake for his daughter’s birthday party. His wife has called and told him to be home, if not early, definitely on time. When he comes out of the bakery, he finds his car gone, towed. He didn’t park in a red or yellow zone; nevertheless, a notice is taped to the curb informing him where his car is. He merely has to pay a ransom (also known as a fine) to get it liberated from the city lot, which means standing in line until it’s his turn in front of a window manned by a by a bored individual. He’s now late, has had a long day, and feels violated, his temperature rising. What he does next, well, it’s dramatic. One story focuses on road rage as a not uncommon occurrence as people rush from home to work and back, all a bit harried, many wound just a tad too tight. In this tale, we encounter two men on a remote road, one driving a trashed pickup, the other in a new Audi. The Audi guy is in a hurry. The pickup guy, not so much. They get into a road duel that takes unintended consequences to a whole new level and definitely does not end well. It is breathtaking how quickly the patina of civility, which we all rely on to get us through the day, can drop away, exposing a side to human nature that is seriously devolved. Each of these carefully crafted vignettes begins in a benign way. But like the handle of a jack-in-the-box being turned, with each slow revolution the awareness builds (you only have to see the first story to know this is not your usual movie) that something is going to pop up and be, in some way, beyond startling. “Wild Tales” (a perfect title) is from Argentina, and the actors would likely be unknown to an American audience. Actually, this fact enhances the comedic authenticity of the desperation shown by some of the characters. The final story takes place at a wedding where a happy, joyous occasion drops off a cliff and becomes a “seriously?” event that escalates to a point where you want to watch the last part with one hand covering your eyes … almost. If you love movies and appreciate when a writer-director like Damian Szifron attempts something that is unabashedly creative, riveting and ghoulish while making you smile, sometimes unwillingly, then you will find “Wild Tales” hits the sweet spot. But be prepared. It does possess a certain twisted, satirical quality.
