Students march to honor MLK By Amber Fossen Ashland Daily Tidings Walker Elementary School students banded together to march in memory of civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. More than 250 students, parents and teachers could be seen winding up Ashland Street toward Southern Oregon University Friday morning. The students, carrying signs proclaiming peace, sang "We Shall Overcome" as they spread the message of peace, love and tolerance. According to Walker Principal Michelle Zundel, the students spent weeks studying Martin Luther King Jr. and his involvement with the civil rights movement. Fifth grade student Mack Gargus said, "I think its important to remember him and not to forget what he did." Martin Luther King Jr. spread messages of tolerance - delivering an average of more than 200 speeches per year - throughout pivotal points in history which include the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case and the Montgomery bus boycott. His message of accepting one another continues to echo throughout schools as children listen, learn and share what King Jr. contributed to the civil rights movement, officials said. Learning about King Jr.'s accomplishments is a lesson fifth grade student Jesse Smith won't soon forget. "He helped whites and blacks come together." King celebrations Southern Oregon University: The 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. Monday in the Britt Ballroom located on the Southern Oregon University campus. The event is free and open to the public. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Rogue Valley food banks.
