No one seems to question her hard work and integrity, yet she has emerged as Target No. 1 in this election. Why? Well, it seems she asks too many questions, which tends to slow the pace of council meetings. Politely yet relentlessly, she scrutinizes "business as usual" to see if it's really good for the city. Cate also happens to be an ardent environmentalist and affordable housing advocate. She listens intently to regular people who bring their problems to the council - rather than brushing them off because they lack the developers' clout. Let's avoid "group think" or the notion that our council is simply there to rubber-stamp the mayor's decisions. No person, no project nor any policy should be above questioning. Let's keep fearless and inquisitive Cate on the council. Allyn Stone Ashland Who is Michael Morris? He is, in fact, the same Mike Morris who has been on the Planning Commission since 1997. The public record of his performance on the commission is readily available to every Ashland citizen at www.ashland.or.us. What well-known projects has Mike voted for? The Bemis project, the DeBoer mansion, the Billings project and the Giordano/DeLuca historic house scrape off project on East Main are a few of the yes votes that indicate where Mike stands on the issue of development in Ashland. It's not surprising that Michael's ads list the DeBoers, the Meeses, the Donovans and John Billings as his supporters. Have you read Michael's leaflets? They suggest that his agenda is similar to that of his hardworking and courageous opponent, Cate Hartzell. However, his yes votes for large scale development indicate otherwise. Read the minutes on the city Web site. Watch the videos. Michael the candidate and Mike the planning commissioner appear to have little in common. If you're happy with the kind of large scale development projects Mike has voted for over the last seven years, vote for Michael Morris. Considering Mike's record, you can expect more of the same. Jane Street Ashland Morris is ready for council Mike Morris (running for city council Seat 3) is not a real estate developer. His opponents try to paint Mike as a "builder" as if that is a dirty word. Mike's a woodworker. He builds cabinets. He remodels existing homes, making them better. Having witnessed him remodeling my home, I was impressed with his ability to coordinate and facilitate the number of people needed to do the job, yet continuing to produce quality work on his own. Mike was born and raised in Ashland, graduated from OIT and worked as an engineer in Seattle. Because of those experiences, he has a keener appreciation for what we've got and he promises to vigorously work to protect it against it being lost, just as he has for the last seven years on the Ashland Planning Commission. Even so, he realizes that a balanced, insightful approach is necessary, and change will and should happen to make things better. A small-businessman who works well with both his hands and other people, Mike can offer solutions to many of the problems facing Ashland. At a time when Ashland is struggling to maintain a broader citizen base, we need representatives who can represent us in our real world. Ed Laskos Ashland Hartzell's work earns our vote I'm voting to re-elect Cate Hartzell to the Ashland City Council. Cate's approach to leadership and representative government reflects her experience as a woman in this culture and her understanding of how systems work; women tend to look at the "whole picture," not just individual pieces. A representative government should be balanced. Women represent 51 percent of the general population. Ashland is seen as an innovative community across the state. Cate brings a dynamic quality to the council and is the only female candidate. Cate is interested in how the status quo can be shifted creatively so that it also benefits people with less power and resources in our culture (a percentage that's increasing). We need the unique perspective of women who aren't afraid to explore new ways of doing things, because our world is changing rapidly. We don't need group think; we need to model living peaceably with differences of opinion. Sarah Collard Ashland Vote for Mike Morris for council I encourage every Ashland voter to support Michael Morris. An Ashland native, Mike is a person who can work with citizens, city staff, schools and the local business community to design a comprehensive plan, a desirable future. He understands the process of consensus building. Experience on the planning commission, his passion for outdoor activities, and his leadership skills are but a few reasons to elect Michael Morris to our Ashland City Council. Graham Lewis Ashland Edwards offers clear choice All week I've heard how Dick Cheney would ride to Bush's rescue and counter Kerry's strong performance in the first presidential debate. Cheney did come out swinging. He relentlessly attacked his opponents and continually tried to justify the quagmire in Iraq. But once the topic strayed from terror, he seemed to lose interest. Both candidates were asked about education, health care, and other issues that affect us all. In answering, Cheney defended his administration and attacked his opponent. But his responses seemed tired and rehearsed, and offered no solutions. I was left feeling that he just doesn't know or care much about the real lives of most Americans. In contrast, I found John Edwards to be warm and genuine. I found his vision on handling terrorism to be clear and based on common sense. But the real difference between the two was how they see ordinary Americans. Unlike Cheney, Edwards had a great deal to say about specific ways that a Kerry administration would tackle the huge problems we all face concerning education, health care, and the quality of our daily lives. And it was clear that Edwards' heart and soul were really involved in these questions, that he really cared passionately about ordinary Americans. In the end, I was left feeling that for all Cheney's experience, he really doesn't have much to offer. Edward's enthusiasm and vision for America were convincing and exciting. I, for one, would much rather have John Edwards be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Karen F.Varney Talent Don't interfere with love You can't make a married heterosexual couple love each other and you can't stop a same-sex couple from loving each other. Since when did love get dropped from the equation of marriage? Marriage should be based on love, not gender. So many unions I've seen over the years between heterosexuals have ended in divorce, or worse, they've stayed together and lived unhappily ever after. I know two same-sex couples who have been together over 35 and 25 years respectively. Why? Because they love each other. One couple was able to get married in Portland before the same-sex marriages were not allowed. I am so glad they were able to do that and they feel blessed that they were able to do that. No government, state, church, or anyone should be able to legislate love. Please vote no on Measure 36.
