So why does every proposal to improve cell service meet vocal opposition? The latest proposal is for an 84-foot cell tower at 290 E. Ashland Lane near Exit 19 of Interstate 5. AT&T has proposed the tower to address coverage gaps in the area. The company says it has received numerous service complaints from customers. There is no question cell towers can be unsightly. That's why Jackson County officials have already required that the tower be built in the "stealth" style to look like an evergreen tree, and the accompanying equipment shelter must blend in with surrounding structures. That's one objection addressed. The Federal Communications Commission notes that radiation from cell towers at ground level is thousands of times less than exposure limits established for safety reasons, and radiation strength decreases rapidly with distance from the tower. The proposed tower is required to be 200 feet from any homes. Another objection addressed. The tower is intended to address coverage gaps, meaning most other areas are already covered.  The FCC says it's unlikely cellphone radiation is harmful, and the list of questions about safety on its website deal mostly with the possible risk of holding a cellphone to one's ear while using it. That's something nearly everyone does, and so far, there is little evidence of harm. Anyone truly concerned about radiation from cellphones would be best advised not to use one.
