Since its inception, the film festival has been generally regarded as a great idea and perfect fit for Ashland - though excitement about the fledgling idea was built to a large degree on hope and potential for the future. The future however, could be now. Coming off of last year's successful festival, the event appears ready to combine excellent planning, a high-level of coordinated volunteerism and most importantly, quality films, to solidify the event as a mainstay on Ashland's packed social calendar. Sunday's AIFF Academy Award party, a fundraiser for the film festival, was sold out weeks in advance. Food and beverage sales continued steadily throughout the evening. The silent auction boasted contributions from local artists, businesses and individuals that fetched a fine price. The organizers coordinated a smooth event, where participants enjoyed the revelry of the Oscars. Of course, the 2005 Ashland Independent Film Festival, slated to run from March 31 through April 4, received a terrific boost from the Academy as well. One of its selections, "Born in Brothels," won an Oscar as did Jim Taylor, co-writer of "Sideways." "Brothels" director, creator and narrator Zana Briski may be able to come to Ashland for the festival, though with Sunday's win, the schedule is likely to dramatically change. Taylor, who wrote, directed and produced a 2005 AIFF selection, "Lost Cause," is also a possible festival attendee. Perhaps the final piece of the puzzle for the festival was the hiring of executive director Tom Olbrich, who has helped rally interest in the event, while organizing its activities. Olbrich constantly reminds people how thankful he is to his dedicated base of volunteers, who are a fiercely committed group. With better coordination, an improving base of films to show and a skyrocketing level of interest, the Ashland Independent Film Festival is ready to become a stalwart event. That's good for local business, good for local filmmakers and mostly good for all of us who will make time to be a part of the festivities. Tickets go on sale to the general public March 16. Based on recent events, it makes sense to plan ahead and buy early. The Ashland Independent Film Festival is shaping up to be that kind of event.
