Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Ashlanders are reacting with shock to the account of Oregon Shakespeare Festival actor Christiana Clark, who posted a Facebook video describing her encounter with a man who spewed racist threats at her as she walked her dog in the Railroad District Friday evening. They are right to be outraged, but they should not be surprised. Ashland residents like to think of their community as more enlightened and tolerant than most. And, in many ways, it is. It is a college town, home to highly educated faculty and students. It is the birthplace of OSF, now one of the top regional theater companies in the country, presenting top-notch, often challenging productions. And it is a bastion of liberal politics in a part of the state otherwise largely conservative. Unfortunately, all that does not render Ashland immune to ignorant, racist attitudes. And, lest we forget, those attitudes have deep roots. The unidentified white man who accosted Clark told her "The KKK is alive and well here." That's unlikely, but the Klan was here, as recently as the 1920s. The man also told her it was "still an Oregon law, I could kill black person and be out of jail in day and half." That's utterly false, but it could have been a reference to "sundown laws" never actually on the books but unofficially enforced here as late as the 1950s. We've come a long way since then. Friday's incident shows we still have a way to go.
