The following is a letter I sent to Mr. David Collier, Oregon DEQ Air Quality Division, on Dec. 15: I am writing on behalf of both my husband, David Oliver, and myself. We are adamantly opposed to any loosening of the current air pollution regulations and believe that, if anything, they should be tightened and strictly enforced. I have frequently read various research findings which indicate that the more the environment is protected, leading to a healthier lifestyle, the greater the benefits for the local economy. I do not think that this valley needs or wants to attract dirty industry; the jobs aren't there anyway. Promote this valley as a healthy, clean place to live and I think the right businesses which are attracted to this asset and want to honor it will come. As a nurse and one who has dealt with respiratory problems, I think we all have a right to breathe the cleanest air possible. Mary Pritchard Ashland Come to tonight's DEQ hearing and say no to increase DEQ, at the bequest of two Jackson County Commissioners and valley wood products industries, proposes increasing the allowable amount of particulate matter in our valley air by 20 microns per cubic meter. DEQ conducts these type of standard changes every ten years, so this change could affect us until 2013! In the most thorough study conducted to date, an increase of 10 microns/cm was shown to increase lung cancer deaths by 8 percent and heart disease deaths by 6 percent. Tidily, there is just one public hearing scheduled on this proposed change. If we don't attend tonight at 6:30 South Medford High School Auditorium, we may be waiting and coughing until 2013 for redress. Please attend and share your thoughts! Susan Roudebush Ashland Now that Saddam is captured, get Bush out of office There are so many important political/environmental/ civil liberties issues that need our attention. I must, however, focus my full attention on removing the fascist from the White House. I see that they have captured Saddam this morning - I expect this will help Bush in his quest for reelection. Now I am just waiting for the regime to claim that Saddam "admitted" to sheltering terrorists. I expect the public will be sold some lie again. We are all supposed to now celebrate that we started an illegal war and we found a pathetic tyrant hiding in a pest-infested hole. Let us see, we capture one pathetic tyrant and steal his oil fields and the only cost is our nation's reputation in the world, at least 100,000 deaths (and more to come) among the people we "liberated." Over 500 deaths and thousands of injuries inflicted upon American citizens, and more every day. The change of Iraq from a relatively free secular government to the beginning of a theocratic (Shiite) totally autocratic regime. And we get a national debt so huge that our great-grandchildren will be repaying it! Oh Yes! let's celebrate! Now I will have to work harder for Dean. That idiot Lieberman responded to the capture with "If Dean was in the White House we would not have captured Saddam!" So? We seem to have killed more Iraqis than he did. What a good Democrat Lieberman is. Just what we need, another war-monger in the White House! Let us put Dean in the position to do what needs to be done to return our troops to their homes and to get us out of this mess Bush has created. It will take several real Democratic presidents before the problems Bush created are cleaned up, and Lieberman is definitely not the one to do it.
