As part of its statewide “Drive Less. Save More” campaign, ODOT has sponsored “Drive Less Connect: SOU,” which will provide SOU students with information about transportation options. The SOU program highlights the benefits of traveling by foot, bike, skateboard, bus and shared car. “To our knowledge, this is the first time a program like this has been implemented on a college campus,” Edem Gomez, an RVTD transportation demand management planner, said in a press release. “When identifying which communities in which to launch this program, RVTD felt SOU students would be best served by the campaign.” SOU students are already using a variety of transportation options. In a fall 2014 survey, students reported using walking, bicycling, skateboarding, carpooling and mass transit for more than half of their daily trips. The program also has goals of reducing traffic, freeing up parking spaces on and near campus and helping SOU reach its greenhouse gas reduction goals, according to Leigh Hackney, an SOU student and coordinator of the Drive Less campaign.
