They might as well. The Grizzlies have earned it. Again. The Ashland High boys swept the banked slalom, slopestyle and halfpipe team competitions to claim the program's straight OISA state championship and sixth in the last nine years last week, securing the runaway victory by edging Sandy by one point in the halfpipe Saturday at Mount Hood. Led by senior Lars Filson and juniors Che Tratensek-Contor and Joviel Gallagher, the Grizzlies scored four top-20 placers in the banked slalom and three top-10 placers in the slopestyle. Then in the halfpipe, already nursing a comfortable lead over the rest of the field, the Grizzlies received a surprise second-place performance from Tratensek-Contor — surprise, because Tratensek-Contor does not have a halfpipe at his home mountain on which to practice the event — to lock up the three-peat. “They were great,” Faurot said. “They were so appreciative of their coaches. It was just a great, great way to cap the season off.” The Ashland girls, led by junior Myla Sumner’s 11th place individual finish, placed fourth in the halfpipe. The AHS boys got off to a great start Thursday by rolling to victory over the 24 other teams in the banked slalom, racking up 1,185 points behind Filson’s team-best sixth-place effort in 32.413 seconds. La Salle’s Parker Busch won in 31.047 seconds. Also for Ashland in the banked slalom, Gallagher took 12th, Tratensek-Contor 14th and Hap Snyder, a sophomore, 18th. Sumner places 21st and freshman Gracie Bales 27th for the AHS girls. Sixty-four boys competed in the bracket-style snowboardcross the same day and Filson was the only Grizzly to advance past the first round. In the slopestyle on Friday, Ashland Tratensek-Contor placed third with a top score of 244 points, leading Ashland to an 849-point, first place team performance, enough to best runner-up Sandy (785). Tratensek-Contor wasn’t the only Grizzly to shine in the event. Ashland’s Micah Bylsma placed fifth with a 230-point run, Gallagher was ninth (201) and Snyder 20th (174). That made Ashland the odds-on favorite to leave the mountain victorious Saturday, and the Grizzlies didn’t let off the gas in the halfpipe. West Linn’s Oliver Tufte topped the 53-boy field with a 199-point top score, but Tratensek-Contor was right behind after the judges awarded him a 193 on his first run. Also for Ashland, Vance Patterson placed 15th (140), Filson 19th (127) and Bylsma 20th (126), as the Grizzlies netted 586 as a team to nip Sandy (585). Even though the Grizzlies don’t have a halfpipe to practice on at Mount Ashland, Faurot said their athleticism and dedication to other extreme sports turned out to be enough. “(Filson) is an avid mountain biker, a really good mountain biker, and feels really comfortable going fast,” Faurot said. “And then (Tratensek-Contor), (Gallagher) and (Bylsma) are all incredible skateboarders.” After the action, the teams gathered in Timberline Lodge for a two-hour awards banquet that didn’t conclude until about 9:45 p.m. The Grizzlies then hopped on their bus for the long trek back to Ashland, pulling into the school at 7 a.m. Sunday. “Totally worth it,” Faurot said. “The four-day trip is a great bonding experience.
