Ashland Ski Area ultimately wasn't to reopen one more time this season after “a roller-coaster ride” of weather forecasts, General Manager Hiram Towle said Thursday, but “we want to go out with a big party” so people can “see their friends one last time on the mountain.” The Big Mountain Bash is set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday up on the mountain, complete with food, drink, music, deals on ski equipment and launch of special pricing on season passes for the next ski season. Forecasts called for at least the possibility of some snow every day from last Friday through Wednesday, but ultimately only 3 to 5 inches fell on the ski area, which ranges from 6,338 to 7,533 feet. “Unfortunately we came out on the bad side,” Towle said. The ski area, which suffered through a 2013-14 season with not a single day with runs operating, totaled 38 open days this year, interrupted by four closures due to melting snow. It was last open for skiing on March 14. “It was really challenging,” Towle said of the work that went into reopening each time. “Most came with quite a bit of work involved ... we had quite a few days of moving snow from as far as a mile down.” The work was worth it, he continued, as it made it “connected people to really good skiing ... we had lots of smiles out there, people had their community mountain back.” Saturday’s Big Mountain Bash features Appalachian-style fiddle music. The café and bar will be open and offering specials. Items in the retail store will go for half-price. There’s no admission charge. The ski area will also launch its spring season pass sale, which offers discounts on tickets for the next season if purchased by April 30. Adult passes will go for $299 and youth passes (ages 7-12) for $149. The ski area is also bringing back junior passes (ages 13-17) for $249. Passes for those 6 and younger or 70 and older go for just $30 for the season. For more information, call 541-482-2897 or go to www.mtashland.com.
