The same could be said for combining the region's best tourist attractions to lure discerning visitors to Southern Oregon. That was the message delivered Monday to the weekly forum hosted by The Chamber of Medford/Jackson County. Bob Hackett, marketing director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Southern Oregon University environmental science professor Greg Jones, Oregon Wine Board member Michael Donovan and Don Anway of the Oregon Tourism Commission explained that today's tourists are looking to explore the culture of an area they visit — not just Shakespeare, but wine, history and outdoor recreation can combine to present a powerful draw. In terms of wine, this region is perfectly situated to produce a wide variety of grapes, with a range of terrain and microclimates unrivaled either to the north of Oregon or south into California. The wine world is taking notice, and that means wine enthusiasts far and wide are hearing good things about Southern Oregon wines. Combine that with the world-class regional theater that OSF provides, and Ashland in particular is perfectly positioned to cash in on the resulting stream of visitors. Cooperative marketing efforts blending theater, wine and the region's rich heritage and spectacular scenery make for a powerful combination. The city's role is to make Ashland as welcoming and comfortable as possible for visitors, so they will not only want to visit, but to linger.
