(AP) - Jeff Tedford, offensive coordinator at Oregon the past four seasons, was hired Wednesday as the football coach at Pac-10 rival California. He replaces Tom Holmoe, who resigned at the end of a 1-10 season. Holmoe had a 16-39 record in five years as coach of the Bears. "I've been wanting to be a head coach for a long time, and I don't think there's a better fit," Tedford said. Tedford will continue at Oregon through the Fiesta Bowl, where the Ducks will play Colorado. At the same time, he has begun putting together a staff to help recruit. Cal's last winning season was 1993 when the Bears finished 9-4 under Keith Gilbertson and were ranked No. 25. The school's last conference title was in 1975. "I have a goal and a vision that Cal can get to where we compete for a Pac-10 championship and at the national level," Tedford said. "The first goal is to have a winning season. I want to set goals high." Tedford is the first big hire for Steve Gladstone, who took over athletic director duties in April. This year, Oregon was among the conference leaders in pass offense and second in rushing offense. "I want to be wide open and balanced," Tedford said. "I want to run the football, throw it and protect the quarterback." Before joining the Oregon staff, Tedford was offensive coordinator from 1993-97 at Fresno State, his alma mater. He realizes he has dual loyalties as the season ends. "I do have a commitment to Oregon to coach in the bowl game and I feel strongly in finishing that commitment," he said. "At the same time, I'm organizing a staff that will get out on the road right away. It's a fine line and I have to balance those things." Tedford said he will visit the football staff at Cal. He will not be involved in recruiting for Oregon but will help develop strategy for the Fiesta Bowl. Since Pappy Waldorf left the program in 1956 with a mark of 67-32-4, Cal has had two coaches with winning records. Mike White, who later went to the NFL, was 34-31-1 between 1972-77; Bruce Snyder, who left for Arizona State, had a 29-24-1 record between 1987-91. "I feel comfortable with the Pac-10 X's and O's battles and the recruiting battles," Tedford said. "This is a great city and one of the best institutions in the country." Email your...
