It's also a good opportunity for a refresher course on giving rolling freight trains the respect they deserve, meaning stop, look, listen and do not try to beat an oncoming train. The trains seen and heard in recent weeks — the first in seven years — are hauling supplies for rail repairs and tunnel improvements between here and Weed, Calif. Freight trains will resume this fall, carrying wood products from Weed to points north. Two trains a day will pass through town, one in each direction, about 12 hours apart. That means jobs on the railroad and fewer trucks on the highway, reducing traffic and saving fuel. A train runs on steel wheels rolling on steel rails, with the point of contact the size of a dime. That low friction means a train can carry a ton of freight 480 miles on a single gallon of diesel, four times more efficiently than a truck. But low friction and massive inertia also mean trains can't stop quickly. A train going 55 mph can take nearly a mile and half to stop. Even at 25 mph, stopping can take two-thirds of a mile. Rule of thumb: If you can see the train, it can't stop soon enough to avoid hitting you. Ashland has several crossings with just a stop sign. We've all become used to the absence of trains; it will take time to — sorry — retrain ourselves to wait while they rumble by.
