--> --> Local rowers will `Row for the Cure' Ashland Daily Tidings Members of the Ashland High girls crew team and the Rogue Valley Rowers have joined forces to enter Sunday's Row for the Cure in Portland. The eighth annual event is a fundraiser for breast cancer research. Each group will row 5,000 meters on the Willamette River early Sunday morning. "I think it's a perfect match of athletics and purpose," local breast cancer survivor Judy Johnston said in a press release. "Plus it raises awareness with another generation of young women. Crew is making these girls powerful and this is another aspect of personal power." The Ashland teams will have seven rowers wear black shirts and one wear white, based on the fact that one in eight women will have breast cancer. "It's profoundly moving to see them row by and see that one white shirt and the seven other black ones," AHS crew board president Christie McQuade said. "It gives me the shivers." The girls' team decided to solicit donations for the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation from every health care provider in Ashland. Donations for the Row for the Cure can be mailed to the Rogue Valley Rowers at P.O. Box 3441, Ashland, Ore. Donations will be accepted by the group until Oct. 8. Email your...
