Even with coverage under the Affordable Care Act, many of us cannot afford the premiums, copays and extra cost of dental and vision plans. Economists suggest that 95 percent of Oregonians would save money under the HCAO Act, and the study bill will provide details on what single-payer health care will cost as we move Oregon forward to provide health care as a human right to all. “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Martin Luther King Jr. Brenda Gould, Ashland The elephant in the room I attended the Oregon Department of Environment Quality question-and-answer session in Medford on the gas export projects. Oregon is fortunate to have citizens concerned about water quality and the effects of global warming on our grandchildren. Questions were thoughtful and pertinent to the cumulative effects of increased fracking and fugitive emissions of methane (a serious global warming threat). The multiple governmental departments evaluating this project are functioning with guidelines and standards that are not relevant to 2015. This project will have long-term, cumulative impacts on regional, national, and global climate chaos, including becoming the greatest emitter of carbon dioxide in Oregon. Once again, the elephant in the room is global warming. FERC failed its responsibility to assess the cumulative impacts of this project on global warming. FERC states this type of assessment is beyond their authority. Who in Oregon has this authority, if FERC does not? Is it Governor Kitzhaber alone? The DEQ is limiting its concern to the project’s effects during construction, intending to evaluate turbidity, temperature and oxygen content of water during construction with no mention of future impacts. When a problem occurs post-construction, mitigation will begin. How can destruction of forest acreage, death of marine, wildlife, and humans be mitigated? We have historical demonstrations of mitigation: the Valdez and Deep Water Horizon catastrophes. We are four-fifths of our way to the agreed limit of temperature increase we can tolerate. Evidently our governmental departments lack the tools to evaluate these projects adequately. Louise Shawkat, Ashland Not watching this year In regard to the Patriots, Brady is supposedly smart, and admits he likes a deflated ball. Then why did he not say anything until the interception after which a Colt player indicated it "didn't feel right"? I would've given the Patriots more credibility if Brady had acknowledged the problem early on. He and the players had to have been able to feel the difference! I think the New England coach/quarterback are out to win at all costs as fines or penalties don't matter to them. As an avid football fan, I used to look forward to the Super Bowl, but I and others I've talked to are disgusted with all this and are likely not going to watch it! In my opinion, I think that New England should forfeit the game to the Colts and let it be Colts/Seahawks Super Bowl. This would discourage any wrongdoing in the future. Also I think the NFL should provide all footballs used in the game. Then neither team has an edge. The New England Patriots are changing the way a lot of people think about pro football.
