Meanwhile, the Oregon Ducks men's basketball squad is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. It's a good year for school sports in these parts. Pan — Thumbs down to a company offering to test household water supplies for lead contamination in a transparent attempt to cash in on fears generated by news coverage of lead contamination problems in Flint, Mich. Flint city officials switched to a more corrosive water source causing lead to leach from old water pipes. Ashland officials have made it clear this city's water is not acidic like Flint's and is treated to keep it that way. Lead levels are far below safety threshholds. Save your money. Pick — A standing ovation to Livia Genise, the driving force behind Talent's Camelot Theatre for 14 years, who is heading for a well-deserved retirement at the end of this year. Genise built the community theater company into a major entertainment engine during her tenure, tripling attendance and moving the company from a converted feed store into a brand-new, state-of-the-art building. Pick — Congrats to Kate Joss-Bradley and Halle Lowe, Ashland High School students chosen to represent Ashland in Guanajuato, Mexico, this summer.
