But on Tuesday, the Grizzlies sprang their attack from behind the service stripe and there was very little South Albany could do about it. Sophomore defensive specialist Myla Norvell ripped seven of Ashland’s 14 aces and Hope Baldrica added six kills and three aces of her own as the Grizzlies buried the visiting Rebels in straight sets in an OSAA Class 5A state play-in match Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. “I think we were on our game,” Ashland coach Robin Akpan said. “We played really well in terms of our serving and our serve-receiving.” Ashland (18-8), the No. 3 seed out of the Midwestern League, beat South Albany (6-14), the No. 6 seed out of the Mid-Willamette, 25-17, 25-11, 25-13, to advance to the round of 16. The Grizzlies will be on the road Saturday, but at press time had yet to learn who they would face and at what time. Saturday’s winners advance to the final eight-team, double-elimination tournament, Nov. 7-8 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. If the Grizzlies serve the way they did Tuesday, they’ll be tough to beat. Norvell, who also led the team with 16 digs, set the tone early, serving Ashland out to a quick 9-0 lead, with seven of her serves in that stretch never making it back over the net. Four of those were aces and three were service winners. “She’s got a great jump-serve,” Akpan said. “They didn’t have an answer for her.” Baldrica, who added two blocks, also served up a four-point run in the opening set, and did it again in the second to help Ashland stay in control. South Albany briefly showed some life in the opening set, rattling off seven points in a row – the Rebels’ only serious run of the match – to get within 20-15. But the Grizzlies didn’t flinch. “We took a time-out and we just refocused,” Akpan said. “Once we sided-out, we were doing good again.” Norvell and Baldrica, a senior middle blocker, had plenty of help. Senior setter Jordan Tilley had four kills, two aces and two digs, junior outside hitter Olivia Rooney six kills and an ace, and senior outside hitter Grace Lenthe five digs and four kills. Now, Ashland turns its attention to its next do-or-die match Saturday. The Grizzlies, who have won three of their last four, already have several impressive wins away from Ashland, including victories over Summit and Bend. Now, one more will pave the Grizzlies’ way to Hillsboro. “We’ll be the underdogs on the road,” Akpan said. “I think part of our preparation the next few days in practice is going to be a lot of competition and putting them in those settings where maybe they are behind and they have to push and apply different strategies to overcome.” The other twist is that the Grizzlies will almost certainly be facing an opponent they know very little about. But there’s no use in worrying about that, says Akpan. “We haven’t seen any of these teams, really, that we potentially could be playing,” she said, “so we’re just going to prepare to play our best game on Saturday and hope that our best game is better than their best game.” Cross Country Junior Raymond Impara will represent the Ashland High boys and junior Christine Impara will represent the AHS girls as the OSAA Class 5A state cross country meet is set for Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene. Raymond Impara placed seventh overall in 16 minutes, 59.7 seconds in last Saturday’s Midwestern League district meet at Fern Ridge Reservoir to qualify for the boys’ state meet. Walter Vail, a junior from Crater, won the meet in 16:32.5 and helped the Comets sweep the first four places. Christine Impara placed seventh in 20:47.3 at districts to become the Grizzlies’ lone female representative at state. Olivia Powell of Marist won in 19:02.4. Men’s Basketball At Arcata, Calif., Humboldt State used a strong second-half surge to pull away and beat Southern Oregon 82-66 in an exhibition game Tuesday at Lumberjack Arena. Senior forward Eric Thompson scored 20 points, Tim Weber had 13 points and eight rebounds and Jacob Kaler and Jordan West 12 points apiece for the Raiders, who open their season Friday against New Hope Christian. Thomas Witzel and Austin Bryan scored 17 points apiece to lead Humboldt State, which used a 13-3 run to pull away.
