It seems that in this valley, unlike many places I've lived or traveled, these stories surface more often, and the outcomes are more positive. Take for example the story of Whitney Chatfield - just a 14-year-old girl, remarkable in certain ways, but unremarkable in many - just a regular kid. Then she was diagnosed with cancer, and out of the blue people began to come forward to help. She is now 16. In the last two years, her family has been the recipient of several benefits on her behalf, thousands of dollars raised, hundreds of hours worked, scores of letters and emails in support, and several articles in local papers to inform the community of her needs. The outpouring has been, and continues to be astonishing. Here is a list of the events being held just this month in this tiny community with seemingly endless stamina. Friday, May 14, 7:30 p.m., a benefit concert and silent art auction, at AHS Mountain Avenue Theatre put on by AHS students. Saturday, May 22, all day Car wash, at Butler Ford, put on by local youth. In spite of all that's been done, there is still much more needed. And the community continues to rally, while Whitney struggles through her treatments in Argentina. This is the kind of story we have the priviledge to be a part of because of the community we're a part of. Whitney's mom recently asked me if people are getting tired of hearing about Whitney. In a recent email, her Dad admitted to being weary of asking for help. But the beauty of a community like ours is that the help will continue as long as the need exists. If it's not why we chose to live here, it's certainly part of why we choose to stay. M. A. Cropper Ashland Densmore's right for the job Sue Densmore's energy, enthusiasm, experience, and integrity have earned my respect and support. Her active role in community organizations throughout the Rogue Valley has given her the valuable perspective necessary for a successful County Commissioner. She listens and understands the issues facing our communities. Her service to Gold Hill on issues of planning and obtaining grants has been extraordinary, because she really cares. Please join me in supporting Sue Densmore for County Commissioner. Gloria Wood Central Point Kupillas lacking on environment Remember 2002? Democratic County Commissioner Sue Kupillas led the strange and local "Democrats for Republican Senator Gordon Smith" campaign against "fellow" Democrat Bill Bradbury. Smith won. Democrat Kupillas told the press she backed Republican Smith over Democrat Bradbury because of Smith's stands on "resource" issues - land, air, water, fish, and wildlife. But in both 2000 and 2001 - Kupillas' Republican "resources candidate" Smith received a remarkable 0 percent (that's zero percent) rating from the League of Conservation Voters for his votes on "resource issues." How "moderate" is that? Now Kupillas touts her commodity-biased Natural Resources Advisory Committee as a reason to support her. She's got big plans for resources in Jackson County, she says. (Resources beware.) It's no wonder the Oregon League of Conservation Voters is endorsing Sue Densmore for Jackson County Commissioner over alleged Democrat Kupillas in the Democratic primary. If "resources" could vote, they'd vote for Densmore. Dave Willis Greensprings Gas gouging must be stopped Scott Darling's timely letter, "Gas price gouging should be challenged," (April 28) brings up a vital concern for consumers and motorists. I agree this price-gouging scam must be investigated, and the greedy perpetrators held accountable! Readers of the Tidings can read an article on this entire subject titled, "Why Are Gas Prices Climbing?" by William Norman Grigg in the May 3rd issue of The New American. It's actually Washington, and not so much OPEC or domestic oil companies, that bears the blame for inflated gasoline prices.
