OUR VIEW Water line project a job well done DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 13, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 13, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Congratulations are in order for the completion of a new water line from Talent to Ashland in time to supplement drinking water supplies should the city run short. The job was done, start to finish, in five and half months, and it came in under budget. That's an example of what government, with the help of top-notch contractors, can accomplish when it needs to. The project had been scheduled for 2015, but city leaders opted to fast-track it earlier this year when it became apparent that the lack of snow last winter would put the city at risk of running out of water. Reeder Reservoir is the main source of city drinking water, but that is supplemented with Talent Irrigation District water in the summer months when demand spikes. TID warned it might shut off water by mid-September because of the drought. The TAP project, which stands for Talent-Ashland-Phoenix, now supplies all three communities with Medford Water Commission water, along with Eagle Point, White City, Central Point, Jacksonville and Medford. Ashland's supply will be used only in emergencies, but the pipeline project still will cost residents more money. Water rates are projected to double by 2022, largely to pay for the TAP project. The initial cost was estimated to be $2.3 million, but that jumped to $4.3 million because of the expedited schedule and increases in the cost of materials. Paying higher rates for utilities is never pleasant, but it beats mandatory water rationing, which could have been imposed if the TAP project hadn't been completed when it was.
